List of Ten Best Films on Terrorism. (Inspired by Hewitt's Radio Show)
self

Posted on 11/25/2005 12:00:01 AM PST by L.A.Justice

On Tv, I just saw the commercial for MUNICH, Spielberg's new film. The trailer looked interesting. The film is apparently about the Mossad agents going after the Palestinian terrorists who murdered the Israeli athletes in 1972...

Hugh Hewitt usually devotes the last hour of his Friday for the discussion of films, with Emmett "The Unblinking Eye".

Emmett usually comes up with the 10 Best Films about something, like forgeries, spying, etc...

I don't know if he ever came up with the ten best list of films about terrorism...

Following are the nominees for the list(I have not ranked the films yet.):

The Siege: Denzel Washington and Bruce Willis...This film does show US under attack by Islamic terrorists. This film is politically correct in some ways...However, it does show Islamic terrorists as ruthless. (A NY City bus gets blown up...)

The Delta Force: Lee Marvin and Chuck Norris...It is a "fun" movie to watch. It is nice to see American special forces portrayed positively...

The Executive Decision: Kurt Russell and Halle Berry... Not afraid to portray Islamic terrorists as evil...An airplane is hijacked...For some biological assault on US.

True Lies: Gov. Arnold and Jamie Lee Curtis.

Nighthawks: Sylvester Stallone as a NYPD cop going after a big-time terrorist from Europe...

The Patriot Games: Jack Ryan (Harrison Ford) vs. IRA

Any more nominations?

Great movie. You had William Friedkin, William Petersen, and Willem Dafoe.

Best car chase scene on film.

You mean another Friedkin film, French Connection.

Movie trivia -- they couldn't get permits in time for the chase under the El, so they filmed it on a Sunday morning -- without permission -- when few people were on the street.

No, I mean the car chase in To Live And Die In L.A.

Going down the wrong way. Friedkin said he wanted to do a better scene than 'The French Connection'. And he did. 8~)

You know that being a New Yorker I can't give L.A. credit for doing anything better, even car chase scenes in movies.

"Special Bulletin" is an *excellent* film, although it's not about international or Islamic terrorism.

It involves a group of peacenik domestic (US) terrorists who build an atomic bomb and then park it in a boat in Charleston harbor, threatening to detonate it if the US doesn't begin to unilaterally dismantle its nuclear weapons.

But even though that's the plot, and it's done very well, it's only secondarily "about" terrorism -- primarily it's about the media. The entire film (which was a TV movie) is done to look like wall-to-wall TV news coverage of the unfolding events. (And it's done realistically enough that it touched off a bit of a "War of the Worlds" type panic among some viewers.) It even begins with a scene from a fake "soap opera", and then after 10-20 seconds a "special bulletin" card flashes up on the screen (thus the title), followed by the "crisis news" coverage which makes up the rest of the film.

The film does a great job of showing how TV news not only *covers* events, it also very much *shapes* them, *participates* in them, and often *facilitates* them.

No problem. I really don't care about L.A. either, it's just a good movie.

Friedkin directed Rules of Engagement, which presaged the attack on the Cole, IMO (the attack came from Yemen.)

At the time, the idiot PC reviewer thought it absurd that Yemenis would be shooting up a US embassy, but looking back on it--he's the fool. Actually, one need not use hindsight to figure that an Islamist movement might cause some Yemenis or any other Muslims to attack an American interest.

An excorcist will be needed..

See, only a true fan would know that it wouldn't work. They tried that in "Term Two: The Sequel," and no dice. And that stunt they pulled where no one was allowed to leave the theater for the last 4 years....

Besides, it's been tried before. Everyone knows already that she can do a complete 360° head turnaround. And we've all heard tapes of "The Voice." And we've all seen the green projectile....well, you know what I'm talking about.

I only hope Kathy Bates is available to do another sequel....

The original Manchurian Candidate

Arlington Road (1997) Jeff Bridges suspects neighbor Timothy Bottoms of terrorist activity. Unfortunately the bad guys win in this one.

Airport (a guy tries to blow up an airliner with the bomb in his attache case)

Team America

Invasion USA (1984) Another fun movie with Chuck Norris saving America from an invasion by terrorists from the Commie countries. Pure Reagan-era kick-ass mayhem.

Munich (2005), heard it was making a lot of people mad in the middle east, so it might be good.

What? No one has mentioned "The Final Option," aka "Who Dares Wins," based on the SAS take down of the Iranian embassy? I'm still trying to find a copy - I've seen it twice, years ago, and thought it was a pretty good movie.
