People forget, as well, that Saddam told his officers we would simply kill them once we found them, or he would if they didn't fight. To protect themselves from both sides most of the Iraqi officers escaped as a prudent choice of living. Once the fighting was over, if I remember right, many of these officers returned to enlist in the new coalition police and army forces.

It is a nightmare for the coalition to know who is friend and who is foe, I for one though realise it means a longer learning curve would prefer not to have former officers in the Iraqi army I would never fully trust them.
