California Republicans are in open revolt against Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger over his hiring of a Democratic operative as his new chief of staff.
And one leading state GOP official is touting actor Mel Gibson as a possible Republican primary challenger to Schwarzenegger.
Officials with the California Republican Party are said to be furious with Schwarzenegger and have demanded a private meeting with the governor to complain about his appointment of Susan P. Kennedy, who was a Cabinet secretary during the administration of Gov. Gray Davis.
Schwarzenegger was elected governor after an extraordinary effort succeeded to recall Davis in 2003.

Agreed. My objection is the selection based on celebrity status, not on the person, their background, or their abilities.

I was very disappointed that Arnold threw his hat in the ring. McClintock seemed by far the superior candidate with his experience and track record of fiscal conservativism. He also had the right ideas on illegal immigration.
But this is California, after all.

I can see it now the Patriot vs the Terminator, a Califyfornia race to the governors mansion!
Uh-huh...Nobody said he was the best guy for the job, McClintock was(and probably still is). Arnold was the one who could get elected.
He's a done deal now. He has no support left among conservative Californians.
Well, there used to be Freeper arguments over whether Arnold was a good governor or not. It pretty much divided between social conservatives, who misliked his pro-abortion, pro-gay record, and fiscal conservatives, who thought he would be a real fighter who would balance the budget.
I haven't seen a single supporter speak out on his behalf since the Kennedy appointment was announced. I'd say he's politically dead.
I supported Arnold and it was the right move at the time. I'm convinced that if Arnold hadn't been in the race, we'd be talking about Governor Bustamante's reelection bid right now. That said, I'm ready for someone else. Arnold squandered his popularity by trying to work with the Democrats early in his term. Had he early on tried the reforms that just lost last November, I think he'd have gotten most if not all of them. Now it looks like any effort at reform is gone and he's ready to sell out every principle he has just to stay in office. I got a bellyful of that with that whore, Gray Davis.
I'm irritated with Arnold and I supported him. If he grants clemency to Tookie, it's over. I would officially be anti-Arnold.
Having said that I can't think of ever supporting McClintock ... then or now.
I swear the Republicans in the state, and many conservatives, are as delusional obsessed with litmus tests, regardless of results, as Democrats are with murdering the unborn.
I'll continue to support Arnold until he does something unhinged like commuting Tookie's sentence or proposing $4 billion in new taxes. Bringing in a Democrat as his new chief of staff so he might be able work with the psychotic, union-empowered Dem legislature smacks both of desperation to get work done but also of a willingness to think beyond the usual political game book. It's just crazy enough to WORK.
I care about results, not party loyalties. If I was one of "those" Republicans, I might as well be a Nazi or Communist and we can just go down with the ship of state now. Why wait for the 2006 election cycle?

Why in hell would Mel Gibson want the grief when he can make a half-billion dollars off every movie he turns out?
Gibson running as governor would be entertaining. The cataclysmic disaster would be more transfixing than watching the Titanic sink, a movie I finally watched on DVD, and found very impressive indeed.
Plus he be gay.

"Rumors abound that, following the horrendous defeat of his Special Election ballot measures, Governor Schwarzenegger may not run for re-election."

I'd greatly prefer McClintock over anyone else I know of right now.
I did vote Schwarzenegger in the recall, but (as has been discussed "to death") that was because my "fear that Bustamante would win" was stronger than my "hope that McClintock could win." Although I never had any illusions that Schwarzengger was a true conservative, he's even leftier than I had feared.
