A couple years ago at the COntra COsta County Fair I talked with a couple of Army Recruiters--me being in when Jesus was Corporal...

Any way at that time they told me an interesting story. THey were having a hard time finding quailifed recruits---They were scoring 9, 5 and other low scores. The test takers were even trying hard to pass. So the recruiters decided to radomly fill in the bubbles on the test. With that result they were coming up with scores arond 40%.

When I took the test I scored 97 out of 99 and kicked myself for missing two questions---What has happend to the public school system?

Some of those people may enjoy the Military lifestyle, in so far as almost all decisions are made for you and you are guaranteed food and shelter. Others may have their eyes opened as to what true personal freedom is and the dangers of the Government making your life decisions for you.

The Military Lifestyle does NOT ensure a wondrously protected stress free life of decisions being made for you, food & shelter...that is called JAIL.

The Military Lifestyle DOES guarantee any individual no matter how abysmal his or her educational background, may achieve their fullest potential....starting from the first baby steps of Private to PFC...taking on increasingly higher levels of personal leadership & responsibility. The Military Lifestyle does not guarantee you anything but Pride in yourself...because whatever is achieved is earned through hard work...

If someone wants any easy life...or an Organization like the Government to make all their decisions...DON'T join the Army...Get a Union Job or a Tenured Teaching position.

Having been a past member of the USAF for 8 years, my only point was that recent high school graduates (or not) would benefit from the Military experience if they have no other life ambitions.

Yes, He doesn't get credit for it, but the 2002& 2003 payraises were huge! Mid grade and senior enlisted got 5-10% each year and the housing allowances went up massively as did special pays.

The VA budget was also increased by nearly 50% during his first term.

My recruiter mumbled something about "damn Cat V's" and said "put your X here."

I wasn't sure what he wanted me to do.

Sorry, read it wrong...my husband told me earlier that I'd taken everything he said 'wrong' today, too...sigh... He told me (actually TOLD ME) to go shopping...so I did :) He's an NCO, So I will blame this on him...if he'd told me that sooner, I wouldn't have been on line earlier...and I wouldn't have said something stupid (that time). I've never been in the "Military" so I'm still good at avoiding personal "responsibility" for my actions when necessary....! Really, I am sorry.

This article tells me we have to take a new look at things like pay, bonuses, living conditions, etc, to keep recruiting strong. And we've got to make sure that military service has intangible rewards -- like respect -- so that smart young people want to serve.

Very true. I guess the other question is, which areas/branches of the services are experiencing recruiting difficulties?

Without much evidence to offer, my hunch is that the type person who volunteers for a combat unit has even more reason to volunteer. As such, I suspect shortfalls are happening in the "safe" support units.

I think that's a great point. What I'm finding is that young people who join the Army or Army Reserve know the nation is at war, and they know they're going into battle. And you know what? I don't care if the number of recruits are down a little -- I love the young people who want to join up and who want to shoulder this burden. We don't need large numbers. With spirited young people like this, the U.S. Army can engage and destroy any enemy -- numbers be da**ed.

Don't worry, I'm not pissed, just grumpy.

The killer whale thing is kind of an inside joke. I saw a guy get the hell beat out of him once basically for being a know-it-all probably about 30 times in one day to a particular guy. The last correction he made was when the other guy pointed out some third party that had a shirt on with killer whales on it.

The guy said "It would be interesting to see a shirt that said 'save the whales' showing a killer whale devouring a baby seal. Hippies would hate that."

The other guy said "Well you know, killer whales aren't really whales."

That was the last time they spoke to each other, as he had been warned before to stop being a smartass. He ended up in the emergency room with a broken nose and jaw. The other guy ended up in jail.

He went overboard with the beating, but Mr. Know-It-All had it coming and had been given fair warning.

Do not take this to imply that I'm going to beat on anyone for being a know-it-all. It's just a story I like to tell. I've been known to be quite the know-it-all myself on occasion.

Oh, and to finish my point, killer whales aren't in the same family as whales. They're related to dolphins and porpoises.
