Where is the Church in the fight against HIV/AIDS?

It’s getting harder to ignore the statistics about HIV/AIDS: 40 million people are infected worldwide. Over half of these are women and children. And in Africa, 14 million children are orphans due to the disease. You hear it on the news, see it in the movies, the President makes speeches about it, and Bono sings about it.

Whose responsibility is it to take on this problem? The Government? The Church? Non-Governmental Organizations? As a Christian and a conservative, I used to demand that the government leave the role of compassionate action to the Church. But are churches doing their part? By one account, there are more government agencies or international organizations involved in HIV care than U.S. churches.

The church has the best way to fight AIDS/HIV. Keep teaching the Biblical idea that two men making love is not only disgusting but sinful. (or two women). In stead of spending millions to cure reprobates, just say no and the problem will have to go away. Of course everyone would have to "just say no". So that wont happen and AIDS will keep going on and on to those who court it.

It does no good to teach the bible unless you love people. Hitler knew an awful lot about the bible. Many of the most violent, brutal people know what the bible says yet refuse to do what it says. the same can be said of people who call themselves christians yet beat their kids, beat their wives, steal from their companies, molest kids, and many other sins yet they know the bible and even teach in sunday school.

homosexual behavior thoughts is another sin in the eyes of God. Just like worry, anxiety, lying, stealing, gossiping, murder, lustful thoughts. Too many people who calim to follow Jesus focus on homsexuality as being worse than other sins when it is not.

I can hardly believe this article is for real. The churches have been neglecting the poor and sick for too long? Where have you been? You can't find a place in the history of Christianity that the Christian Churches have not been in the front lines of taking care of the orphans, uneducated, sick and poor people. This article is nothing but someone trying to set himself up for praise for doing something that has been done for 2000 years. What exactly do you think made Mother Teresa so popular? Power shopping? Sheesh.

Yeah, I guess it doesn't help much when the leaders of African countries deny that AIDS is transmitted through sex or take any accountability for outlawing child brides, rape, multiple partners outside marriage, etc. Meanwhile, the Christians there are being slaughtered by the religion of peace.

I'm always very suspicious of people who start their first column off, "I'm a conservative, but..."

The way churches are going to fight AIDS is by converting people to the monogamous and loving sexuality of Christianity.

" He said, “The first Reformation was based on creeds. The second Reformation will be based on deeds. The first was based on belief; now it is on behavior. "

Um, Rick? That would mean that the second reformation would be diametrically opposed to the first reformation.

I never said hitler was following the bible. I only said hitler knew what the bible said.
"Hitler knew an awful lot about the bible"
My point was that it is one thing to know what the bible says and another to acutally live out and follow Jesus.

we generally pay a stiffer price for murder, adultery, etc., than for stealing some paper clips at the office.

Really? So why is it that 'all have sinned and come short of the glory of God?' Seems that all sins are on an equal footing with Him.

I don't know where you go to church, but my church has been taking care of the poor, and sick for many, many, years. You must be speaking of "Liberal" congregations who think it's the job of the Government to take care of everyone.

"Have the churches stopped opposing homosexuality, promiscuity, and rape? If yes then they are part of the problem. If no then they are doing more than anyone else in fighting AIDS."

Exactly so.
