Jesus was pretty well off.

Proof?

Jesus wore a seamless garment. These were very expensive. The Roman soldiers cast lots for it after they put Him on the cross. Jesus also had a treasurer. Judas. If He didn't have money...He wouldn't have needed one.

Jesus wore a seamless garment. These were very expensive.

Source? In fact, the garment you describe was called a talit, and all but the poorest pious men had them.

Jesus also had a treasurer. Judas. If He didn't have money...He wouldn't have needed one.

Who had a treasurer? Jesus, or His mobile group of disciples numbering from a dozen to sometimes hundreds? The fact is that this precisely what teachers and their students did in First Century Galilee. It was quite common, and very view of those teachers could be called "wealthy". Most of them were day laborers, and spent their free time teaching and studying. In First Century parlance, a Torah-teacher that was a common laborer was well regarded.

Some of the disciples may have been well off, but we are given the contrary picture of the Master Himself. His adopted father Joseph was certainly not a wealthy man. In Luke 2, we see them paying for Mary's purification sacrifice by a bird sacrifice - which was permitted but only for the poor.

He had wealthy friends, but of Himself He said,

When Yeshua [Jesus] saw the crowd around him, he gave orders to cross to the other side of the lake. A Torah-teacher approached and said to him, 'Rabbi, I will follow you wherever you go.' Yeshua said to him, 'The foxes have holes, and the birds flying about have nests, but the Son of Man has no home of his own.' Matthew 18:18-20 CJB

The "Jesus was rich" apology has been offered by many in "health and wealth" ministries over the years - all for the express purpose of excusing their excesses. Biblically, historically, and archeologically, it is a myth. He was poor of His own volition, and He humbled Himself by His own will.

If people are wealthy, fine and good - but don't claim "Jesus was too, so it is OK." Being wealthy is OK - but not because "Jesus was."
