Yeah, that's probably most of the problem, although I was in a virtual gunfight in a topic regarding PreColumbian non-extinction of the horse... ;')

Take a look at the abstract that is the last link in the earlier post. It's got a really good explanation of why the wheel wasn't used in the New World (not just in mountainous area). The New World did use the wheel (rotational tools) for other things but not transportation.
