They are falling all over themselves this morning trying to backpeddle.
All these news agencies want to be first! when news breaks (that's understandable)....but to plunge headlong without confirming is unprofessional.
I started wondering at this 'wonderful' news around 1AM when the supposed press conference didn't happen.
I thought, if the news is so great, why aren't they having a pr moment just to say they're alive.
But I too was caught up in the 'good news' because FOX's Bill Kemmer and a couple others said it was true.
FOX is getting some angry emails this AM....they admitted.
I sent a email..
I saw the first report about midnight and told my wife I would not be getting too excited until I see them being brought out by the rescuers. It's a long way from finding them to having them safely on the surface and out of harm's way. All of the reporting I saw consisted of talking to, and with, family members who seemed to be parroting what they had heard from other family members.
Imagine if instead of wanting to be first, they wanted to report factual news. If even ONE news outlet stepped up and said we cannot confirm this but will report what other news outlets are saying they would now be the only news outlet that could say they reported facts, not innuendo or "overheard" communications from third party sources.
