I dont know any more about the unfortunate incident than what I read and heard in the MSM, but I can make some logical conclusions about what happened. One report, probably true, stated the media intercepted radio communications from within the mine and used that for the basis of their original story. Yes, radios will work within mines and tunnels using leaky coax technology. And, radio frequencies for all companies can be found on-line, so with a simple radio scanner the MSM had all they needed to eavesdrop on private mining company communications. Its easy to misinterpret intercepted communications, especially if intercepted information is out of context.
So my guess is the media, doing for gain and profit, what they accuse our President of doing for National security, were simply monitoring the private communications channels of the mining company or rescuers, and obviously misinterpreted what they heard. The earlier report I read about the miners being found alive indicated the information had not been confirmed by the mining company. I also suspect much of the MSM failed to pass the story along with the caveat that the information was unconfirmed.
So I dont suspect malice, only incompetence.

I've not seen a scrap of evidence indicating this; the celebrations in the church began without any media involvement, and that celebration was the source of the media story.

Careful out there in that limb.
The timeline of actual events and news reports do not back up your speculation.

(ONLY incompetence?...) I would think that the consequences of this should warrant anything that the MSM reports, be viewed with a jaundiced eye and put on hold for, at least, a 24 hour period until they are through fighting for being 'number one' in "BREAKING NEWS".

re: "media intercepted radio communications from within the mine and used that for the basis of their original story"
The only part of the communications law that carries a criminal penalty if the section that prohibits the use for personal gain any information obtained from a radio message not intended for the the listener. It's also a criminal offense to divulge even the existence of a transmission, let alone the content.
If they based their reporting on information intercepted via a two-way radio transmission then they are guilty of not only sloppy reporting but also a criminal act.
I agree with you 100% that there was nothing malicious involved.
