As Term Expires, Warner Grapples With Political Future

(AP) - Very soon, Virginia Gov. Mark R. Warner will leave the Executive Mansion in Richmond for the last time, still struggling with a decision that will define his life.

Though a Democrat in a Republican state, he departs with the highest job-approval ratings of any Virginia governor since pollsters have tracked such things. Network pundits and national publications are speculating about his prospects in the 2008 presidential race.

He's done nothing to discourage the speculation. Warner has a federal "leadership committee," a prerequisite for raising both money and his national profile, and it grossed $2.5 million in its first fundraiser last month.

He's traveled extensively the past six months, keynoting Democratic galas and gatherings in several states -- particularly Iowa and New Hampshire -- and has even more on his itinerary after he leaves office Jan. 14.

And in spite of it all, he still struggles with doubts about whether he is ready to undertake a long, draining national campaign for the White House.

"I want to be part of the debate, but there's still a long way to go from being part of the debate to taking the plunge," Warner said in a lengthy interview last month in the Executive Mansion's homey upstairs den.

Warner may be the beast's biggest problem. IMO

This Warner character has more money than the Bush family combined.

The Lefties love him ~ most probably hope he'll drop some of that money on them. However, like all rich Democrats, he'll let others donate on his behalf, and will end up not owing a dime, nor having spent a dime, on his own campaign.

His integrity quotient isn't really very high.

This article is really lame. As a sucessful businessman and self-made multi-millionaire Warner has lots of choices. I agree that he appears to be on the dem horizon, but I am suspicious of the construct that has two VA governors contending for the presidency, Might that be because the press refuses to look beyond the beltway?

Of course Democrat Govs claiming credit for the economic boom created by Republican Presidents never seem to work nearly so well at the polls at All Propaganda thinks. Interesting to compare and contrast the slavish hand licking tone of this piece with ANYTHING written by AP about President Bush. More wishful thinking by the same people who bring you the fraudulent AP 12% Democrat oversample poll this week

Warner vs. Allen - wow, what a matchup that'd be.

Warner is the one to watch. In my opinion, unless the Republicans put up a very very strong candiate, he will be the next president. He's everything Bill Clinton was but more--not only is he a moderate republican/conservative democrat, but he's a millionare.

Warner is not "moderate". Rather, he's a fascist. In today's Democratic party parlance, fascists pass for "moderates" of course.

Do not be fooled by this guy.

That's a bold statement to say about a fellow American, no matter if he's of a different political bent from you, yet still living in our free and liberal democracy. Especially when you have no proof at all in backing up your statement. Fascist? Do you even know what a fascist is?

The only reason he is so "loved" is other than the largest tax increas in the history of the Commonwealth he did NOTHING...which means he's did screw anything up that is noticeable.

Any examples of this, or are you just flinging terms around indiscriminately?

Yup. I definitely know what a fascist is, and this guy has been Governor of the state I happen to be living in for the last four years.

He lived up to the expectation.

Fortunately the Republicans control the legislature and kept this guy in his place.

And we hear from someone else who's been asleep for the last four years.

You really ought to pay some attention to Virginia news.

This "newby" is attempting to address MY contention that Gov. Warner is little more than a fascist ~ a "corporatist" to be specific. But, since he's a "newby" and not used to the way FR functions, he didn't know how he should address the party to whom he is directing his comments.

I'll agree he's a corporatist.........but I disagree with your earlier statement about the Republican legislature keeping him in line..........who was it that passed his tax increase?

So - VA was short $2B, Warner pushed for (and got) a $2B tax increase, then VA had a $2B surpluss.

Let's see - balanced budget amendment - yep, I voted for that, in 1981, I think. VA cannot legally have a $2B surpluss.

So where did the money go?
