WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Arlen Specter on Friday announced he would vote to confirm Samuel Alito to the U.S. Supreme Court.
"I intend to vote to support Judge Alito's nomination as associate justice of the Supreme Court," said the Pennsylvania Republican at the conclusion of his committee's confirmation hearing.
Specter, a moderate who supports legalized abortion, announced his support of Alito, a conservative appeals court judge who was grilled closely on his past statements in opposition to a woman's right to an abortion.
Most, if not all, of the eight Democrats on the Judiciary Committee are expected to vote against Alito. The panel will meet on January 17 to see when it can vote its recommendation to the full Senate.
Once in a while, Specter is good for something. Once in a great while.
I am SOOO relieved........
Thank you Senator Specter.
The disgusting thing is that this even rises to the level of "news." It should be on the same level as, "the sky is blue."
I was very unsure about Specter going into these hearings, but after watching him during them, I'm not surprised he's supporting Alito. It's still very good to hear - a lot of wavering Red State Dims were probably watching Specter to see which way he would go. This announcement may pull a few of them over to our side.
Specter voting against the demoncRATS like Ready Teddy--will wonders never cease. If fact, wonder what Specter gets out of crossing his demoncRAT friends?
I have written letters to Dodd and Lieberman, asking for them to confirm Alito. Dodd is a longshot. Lieberman is a possibility.
Wonder what Rove has on him in his little black file?
/h
This is payback for Bush's support during the last election.
I believe Leiberman will vote for him. Just a hunch.
He said he would vote for him to get out of committee. Hid did not committ to vote for him on the floor.
Any Dems in favor of Alito?
Seems like the Demwits forgot this is an election year.
he has done a good job with both Roberts and Alito, we have to give him credit.
Arlen is apparently comfortable with Alito's understanding of Scottish law.
once it appears that the republican caucus will hold together and deliver 51 votes for Alito, alot of Dems will cross over and join. to be honest, I don't care if its a straight party line vote in the full senate.
We don't need his floor vote. That's the easy part.
Alito is a Scottish name?
I guess Specter has finally figured out about dancin with who brung ya.
