In my time the police were not called first.

Also in your time I would bet there were no 14-year-olds pulling stuff like this. Or adults for that matter. In the old days, people might have had guns, but they fought with fists. You didn't need the police as often.

but that is beside the point: it is a weapon.

Odd that bb guns, pellet guns, and even black powder weapons are not considered "deadly weapons". Even nervous ninnies have their moments. Register my bow and crossbow, nitwit.

In furtherance of the old days, usually the mobsters had guns and there was no mistaking a toy gun for a real one and they certainly were not carried to school.

I got shot with a piece of crap .25 in 1981. Keyholed across my hip. It hurt like hell. The Kern County Sheriff was called. They asked what I did to get shot. I was urinating in the restroom at the theater. Law enforcement shows up to write a report. We should never allow our schools to become armed camps. IMHO

Was "your day" before 1996? I know mine was -- I graduated in 1980.

Before a 14 year old in Paducah killed three students and wounded five.

Before an 11 year old and a 13 year old killed four students, one teacher and wounded 10 other students in Jonesboro, Arkansas.

Before a teacher was killed and two students wounded by a 14 year old in Edinboro, PA.

Before a 15 year old killed 2 students and wounded 22 others in Springfield, Oregon.

Before Conyers, GA.

Before Columbine.

It's a different world, my friend.

Assuming you're age is near my own, in our time, we never took guns to school. Yes, we guys did carry pocket knives, but they were never taken out for anything other than cleaning our fingernails or carving the name of this weeks love of our life on the desk.

I still ask, if the parents knew this boy was disturbed, why did they allow him to have a realistic looking pellet gun? If the brother knew something was up, why didn't he talk to him or involve the parents, before school?

Don't blame the Cops for acting properly to protect others.

One more reason to keep our kids out of the public schools...

It's a different world, my friend.

I do know. We have three wonderful children. Teenagers all. I have been shot, bitten, stabbed, and lost my 4 front teeth to a steel pipe. I no longer go to those places, nor associate with those people. And we try to teach our children well.

Ralph Penley was "angry" because he had spoken to police before he arrived at the school and told them Christopher did not have a real gun. Christopher's younger brother told school officials the same thing, Nation said.

No cop in his right mind is going to have that "toy gun" pointed at him and believe it was "only a toy". This is a tragic event but not evidence of police negligence based upon people saying "he doesn't have a real gun, only a toy"! I sure wouldn't bet my life or anyone elses's on hoping it was only a toy!

Too bad they didn't try a Taser first... But, face it, if they had tazed the kid they would have been criticised as well (but he would at least be alive),

Actually, a fragment of a dummy bullet lodged in the barrel and projected by a blank killed Brandon Lee. I was wrong, using info from old reports. New info has since come out.

wrong...the blanks killed him (Brandon Lee)

That is correct. There was, apparently, some debris in the barrel.

The next question is: How many 15 year olds are in 8th grade?

It was a real pellet gun. I have a box of rabbit pelts and memories of many fine meals taken with such a pellet gun. It was quite real to the ex-rabbits. I had to be fairly stealthy in those days. Once I got a .22LR bolt action rifle, it was a bunch easier.
