OLYMPIA—The Evergreen Freedom Foundation (EFF) has converted the National Education Association’s (NEA) 2005 financial statement (U.S. Department of Labor form LM-2) into a user-friendly spreadsheet, which has been made available to the public on the organization’s website today.

The U.S. Department of Labor recently updated the reporting requirements for unions in an effort to increase financial transparency. Unions are now required to detail expenditures, including: officer and employee compensation; representational activities; political activities and lobbying; contributions, gifts and grants; and overhead expenses.

“This information is important for anyone who has an interest in public education,” said Ryan Bedford, an analyst with EFF’s Labor Policy Center. “Lawmakers, parents, and education professionals ought to know how the nation’s largest teachers union spends its members’ dues.

“Nearly half of the NEA’s 657 employees earned more than $100,000 a year, with almost 90 percent of its employees making more than $40,000 a year.”

Also of note: The NEA made disbursements to several organizations in Washington state. The Washington Education Association received $2,336,000 in grants, program expenses, and litigation costs, plus a loan of $800,000. A Political Action Committee (PAC)—Protect Our Public Schools—received $500,000, and the National Association for the Education and Advancement of Cambodian, Laotian, and Vietnamese Americans (NAFEA) got $5,000.

NEA Disclosure Spreadsheet can be found at http://www.effwa.org/NEA LM2 Database.xls.
