LAS VEGAS - A 22-year-old aspiring teacher from Oklahoma was crowned Miss America on Saturday night, the first time the storied but struggling pageant was held outside Atlantic City, N.J.

Jennifer Berry, a student at the University of Oklahoma, outlasted 51 other women to become Miss America 2006, earning a $30,000 college scholarship and a yearlong speaking tour in the process.

Here in Vermont they're considered silly, even by pretty girls who would easily qualify.

Feminism rules Vermont...that is why Miss America is considered 'silly'. I remember when one Vermont embarrassed us all by wearing a 'trendy' belly ring a few years back. That went oer like a lead balloon.

I could be wrong but I think the song was pre-recorded for tonight's show. As far as a more detailed analysis, here is another version, some of which you mentioned:

LAS VEGAS (AP) - A 22-year-old aspiring teacher from Oklahoma was crowned Miss America on Saturday night, the first time the storied but struggling pageant was held outside Atlantic City, N.J.

Jennifer Berry, a student at the University of Oklahoma, outlasted 51 other women to become Miss America 2006, earning a $30,000 college scholarship and a yearlong speaking tour in the process.

Miss Georgia Monica Pang was first runner-up and Miss Alabama Alexa Jones second runner-up. Miss Virginia Kristi Lauren Glakas and Miss District of Columbia Shannon Schambeau rounded out the top five. Miss Hawaii Malika Dudley won Miss Congeniality.

Berry, an advocate for the prevention of drunken driving, wowed the judges by dancing ballet for her talent routine. She succeeds Miss America 2005 Deidre Downs, who ended up wearing the crown 16 months because this year's pageant was postponed by four months.

An Atlantic City institution for 85 years, the pageant traded the Boardwalk for the Strip this year in a bid to revive interest. Without coverage from a major television network for the first time since 1954, it aired on Country Music Television.

The pageant, which dabbled in reality TV-style gimmicks in recent years as it tried to lure viewers back, struck a more old-fashioned theme this time out, despite the move to Sin City.

Video clips from old pageants were aired on the telecast, and two traditions that had been absent since the 1980s were revived: The women wore sashes naming their states and elected a Miss Congeniality.

For problem-plagued Miss America, the proceedings at the Aladdin Resort & Casino were a high-stakes affair.

Spurned by network television because of declining ratings, the pageant announced plans in August to move out of Atlantic City. Normally held in September, the event was postponed as organizers scrambled for a new TV outlet, ultimately settling on Country Music Television, a cable outlet with some 78 million subscribers.

Women have paraded at the pageant - wearing swimsuits and smiles - since a 16-year-old girl from Washington, D.C., won an eight-way bathing beauty revue in 1921.

The hokey seaside publicity stunt blossomed into an American icon, its Cinderella trappings and girl-next-door appeal becoming a television staple.

But its luster has been fading for years, the result of fragmented viewership and its airing on Saturday nights, historically a date-night dead zone for television.

The pageant was jettisoned by ABC after the 2004 crowning of Deidre Downs was watched by 9.8 million - 500,000 fewer than tuned in the year before. The move literally pulled the runway out from under Miss America and led to a cascade of problems threatening its future.

The loss of revenue from the TV rights contributed to a $1.7 million deficit for the Miss America Organization, a nonprofit charity that runs the pageant.

Gambling that a move from Atlantic City would help revive interest, pageant organizers cast their lot with Las Vegas, no stranger to pretty faces and glitzy stage shows.

I remember some hubbub a few years back when Miss West Virginia was asked if she thought she might win. She said something to the effect of, "I have no chance. There is an Asian girl, an African-American, a kidney transplant, and a California, Florida, and Texas girl."

Honest folk in West Virginia, they are.

Why did I not have to look at the sash to recognize that sweet honey was from Texas?

Probably cuz you were starin' at the area that the words 'Miss Texas' were stretched across!

But its luster has been fading for years, the result of fragmented viewership a more jaded America expecting beauty queens to act more like strippers than wholesome girls.

I thank you for the clarification, but the Aladdin still went through bankruptcy, current ownership or not, and I gather it's been in trouble for years. And the Planet Hollywood transformation has hardly commenced, even now some time after the purchase.

As to The Song, part of its lyric goes like this:

...The dreams of a million girls
Who are more than pretty
May come true in Atlantic City....

That's why I'm wondering if it got sung, and if so, how they changed the lyrics. I gather from your reply it wasn't sung.

P. S. I miss the way Glenn Osser and his Orchestra performed it.

Umm...maybe I missed something, but I don't ever recall comparing the bravery of these women to the people serving in Afghanistan and Iraq.

You have every right to take exception to MY OPINION, but bravery is relative. I believe my use of it was from a personal point-of-view (as I'm a shy person). Therefore, they are brave to me. Nevertheless, thanks for the mockery.

1973, Terry Meeuwsen, De Pere, Wis.

In 1975 I was working out at the West Suburban Milwaukee YMCA in Wauwatosa and she was leading an aerobics class there. It seemed that she didn't exactly cash in on the notoriety of her title...

But then she shows up as a sidekick to Pat Robertson on the 700 Club about 10 years later.

Sure paid off.

You are correct, it was not sung live. I don't know if the lyrics were changed.

As to whether of not the Aladdin is in trouble financially, I can assure you it has been doing much better than expected over the last few years considering the shape it was in financially at the time it was purchased by Robert Earl and Doug Teitelbaum. "In trouble?" Not hardly. The slow-down in the Planet Hollywood transformation had little to do with the bankruptcy of the property or its financial situation. In fact, they already had the cash funding to start the renovations back at the time the sale closed in September of 2004. The slowdown mainly related to obtaining the contractors license. How do I know this? Well, let's just say I'm probably a lot closer to the casino's finances than you are. :)

Again I thank you, and I gratefully concede the point.

P. S. One last time on this business: The Song was sung by -- Bert Parks. What a cop-out.

Just damn, that's funny.

Be even funnier if Miss Texas raised her arms and we found that she went unshorn.
Though I doubt she's that uncouth.
