Motor City hospitality will bowl over Pittsburghers

Motor City hospitality will bowl over Pittsburghers By Marisol Bello FOR THE TRIBUNE-REVIE Monday, January 30, 2006

DETROIT - Steelers fans taking a road trip to Detroit for Super Bowl XL can expect a pedestrian's paradise: a downtown buzzing with excitement, busy stores and restaurants, a street scene full of festivals, parties, ice sculptures and -- weather permitting -- even dog sledding.

OK, it ain't the real Detroit. Any other time, a pedestrian in the Motor City is about as rare as a Cowboys fan in Pittsburgh. But it is representative of the changes in place this week for guests coming downtown. They're closing off streets, for crying out loud. They're encouraging people to walk.

Next thing you know they'll be telling people to root for Ohio State.

I agree with the outdoor, real grass, part.

I've got nothing against football being played in the cold but I don't think it's an essential element.

I guess being from Wisconsin I think of football as a winter sport instead of a summer one. I cannot understand how Arizona could get a team. Playing football in 100 degree weather just doesn't seem right.

what an f'ing joke.... Detroit?... in the winter time....

What a paradise! Gawd, just the thought of the panoramic view of the downtown area.

makes me all warm and fuzzy just thinking about it....

I'm hoping next year that Newark,NJ , Gary,In or maybe Marion,IL can get their bid in for the Super Bowl.......

wait a minute, I just forgot...Compton,CA would be just a great place with that big LA, San Diego, Oakland and SF markets just screaming for their time in the sun... I mean these are veritable showcases for the democratic party policies and the benefits of well run, caring, socially secure city governments.

I'd just like to get a "real" breakdown on the number of robberies, assaults, theft and murders to visitors during this NFL "showcase".

Maybe these fine planners will hold the Olympics in Somalia, Botswana or the slums of Delhi.

Many areas of Detriot should be used by the military for live fire urban combat training. It may even improve the property values.

The SB should be played in an outdoor stadium with natural grass and in a cold climate, the way football was meant to be played.

Football wasn't designed to be played in February. Until the one-eyed monster took over the game, the champhionship game was played a week or two before Christmas.

Some of it is coming from Dearborn.

I've never been there and based on remarks I read on FR, I don't see it making my list of must-see places anytime soon.

We don't have a flake of snow right now. It was 51 degrees yesterday. Netmilsdad and I were thinking of pulling out the camper and taking a weekend off.

It will probably be blizzard weather in June.

If you come here, hit Greenfield Village and the Henry Ford then get back on I-94 and continue up to the thumb (you know, MI is like a mitten, the eastern middle is the thumb). It's beautiful up there. If you can take a stop and go over the Blue Water Bridge to Sarnia, you'll have a great time.

My nephew and his family were coming to see me and he got off at 8 mile for gas.
Big, brave guy that he is, he said, "Never again!"

Downtown's not that bad. Now go up Gratiot or down Fenkell, and it's another story.

Pontiac's part of metro Detroit. About 25 miles from downtown.

When Boston College played Toledo in The Murder City Bowl, Game Package mailings were put immediatly into the circular file unopened.

Oh I don't know Dan.
I was scared to walk to my car after my girls danced at Commerica Park for Polish Appreciation Day. Creeped me out.

I was glad that we were in a big crowd of strong Pollack men. Some unwashed, glazed-eyed men just staring at us. *shiver*

I would not go into Detroit without Apache gunships for support.
