I wish that I had seen this thread yesterday so that I might have posted about this.The Difference Engine.
Charles Babbage, postulated the very first card reader or computer. It was called the difference engine, and it is considered by some to be the prototype of the very first computer.
As I recall, he never actually built the thing, but he did design it. There are plenty of links on the Internet concerning the "Difference Engine" or "Charles Babbage" for some enterprising young student to explore.
