Petition Filed to Recall Memphis Mayor Willie Herenton

With papers in hand Thursday, Thaddeus Matthews walked into the Shelby County Election Commission to submit his petition to recall Memphis Mayor Willie Herenton.

Matthews hopes his recall petition will put Herenton out of office.

"We in this community have complained about politicians, how they mislead us and misguide us. Now the opportunity is here to do something else about it," he said.

Matthews is a former radio talk show host and, often critic of Herenton. He said the mayor hasn't been honest with voters.

"We have a 25-30 million dollar deficit in this particular city and this mayor cannot tell the community where that money went."

If his petition is successful, Matthews will have to get 70,000 signatures to get the recall on the ballot. He said he plans to use supporters to help gather those signatures. Mathews will have 75 days to gather the signatures and submit them to the Election Commission.

"If you take only two hundred people, and those people get two hundred signatures, that's 40,000 signatures right there," he said.

Mathews said voters have had different reactions to the petition. He said he hopes those people will get the chance to have their say if his petition goes through.

So...basically you're saying that while Herenton may be incompetent, the Ford's are corrupt?

Yikes, that doesn't sound like much of a choice!

Thank God! I can't stand any more of his outrageous outbursts and arrogance.

The corruption is already out of control...the Fords don't have to be in office for the corruption to be a problem. But God forbid any one of them (Ford) gets the mayoral position.

Double taxation on property for homeowners, Extreme car allowances for MLG&W executives and other bogus spending, buddies with other corrupt bad guys that have really interesting records of fraud, bribery and racketeering, and thats just the tip of the iceberg. These guys are just ridiculously abusing their power and taking advantage of honest people in front of everyones eyes. I'd sign this petition in a heartbeat, but the pessimist in me says that corruption is too rampant to make a sizeable difference.

Here is a URL that has information about the Fords,
including Joe Ford, Jr., the lawyer who may have just
taken up residence at the N. J. Ford Funeral Home, which
will be his only qualification to run for Harold Ford, Jr.s
seat in congress.

If any of you lawyers are without much of a practice around the country, have your name changed to Ford, move here and you have a good shot at election. At least until the voters in Memphis wake up.

There is a link on the above site to take you to a picture of the Mayor of Memphis doing a jig to Leroy Brown at a church. Lots of ways to get to heaven, or to ask for forgiveness, I guess.
