"The road of isolationism and protectionism may seem broad and inviting, yet it ends in danger and decline," railed President Bush in his State of the Union. Again and again, Bush returned to his theme.
"America rejects the false comfort of isolationism. ...
"Isolationism would not only tie our hands in fighting enemies, it would keep us from helping our friends in desperate need. ...
"American leaders from Roosevelt to Truman to Kennedy to Reagan rejected isolation and retreat."
Why would a president use his State of the Union to lash out at a school of foreign policy thought that has had zero influence in his administration? The answer is a simple one, but it is not an easy one for Bush to face: His foreign policy is visibly failing, and his critics have been proven right.

Let me be the first to say it. F#*k YOU, PAT BUCHANAN.
But what has done more to radicalize Islam than our invasion of Iraq? Who has done more to empower Islamic radicals than Bush with his clamor for elections across a region radicalized by our own policies? It is one thing to believe in ideals, another to be the prisoner of some democratist ideology.
just Pat with his usual write the facts you wish existed. Islam has ALWAYS been radical and committed to JIHAD
thanks Pat for more Sci-Fi politics.
Wacko's to the Right ...
Here I am ... stuck in the middle, with you.
Let me second that! And contrary to MSM stamements, Pat Buchanan is not a conservative! He's an Israel-hating isolationist!
At least he picked up on the theme of the speech. That's more than I can say for other commentators.
PB might mean Pat Buchanan's initials, but more realistically and aptly it means PURE BULLSH*T!!!
Just flailing and failing. Yep. Afghanistan is just a quagmire, Iraq has seen no improvement and is worse than under Saddam, the historically low casualty numbers for two wars are signs of our incompetence, and the whole world hates us.
I'm joining your campaign for 2008, Pat. /s
Isolationism is misplaced here. Paleos, like Pat, are for fighting for the interests of the USA such as taking out bin Laden, al Queda and anyone else that attacks our land. They are not for being the world's policeman to advance the interests of England, Formosa, Ireland, Israel, Kosovo, Kuwait, Korea, et al who are engaged in ancient conflicts. As Paleo Washington put it - no entangling alliances. Pat is right for America.
