New Orleans scrambling for Mardi Gras

Officials in New Orleans are scrambling for funds to pay for the 2006 Carnival parade season. The city began planning the Mardi Gras festivities just weeks after Hurricane Katrina hit in Aug 29 and the accompanying levee failures devastated the city. Krewe officials have yet to line up the $2.7 million needed, the New Orleans Times-Picayune reports. MediaBuys LLC of Los Angeles, which was hired to find sponsors, told the newspaper significant sponsorships may be announced Monday. None had been finalized by Thursday, the newspaper said. Councilwoman Renee Gill Pratt, who chairs the city council's Budget Committee, said she would not support canceling the event if no sponsors are found. Instead, she said, the council will have to find $2.7 million in the budget.

I hate to say that but there is a racist edge. Part of the problem is the MSM. Everyone had a viewpoint of NOLA as full of poor welfare cheating black people. As I try to point out that wasnt the entire picture. The thing about southern cities and esp Nola you could have great wealth and two street over poverty. It was gritty but real. I was in Chicago recently. A great city. However it was amazing how segregated that town is. Its like you could go to church go to the store go eat out and not like run into any Black people. It was weird and in fact a little disturbing in a way.

God is doing his best to destroy Sin City.

Problem is the sinners who were suppose to get his warning didn't.

If you could spend 2.7 million to make, oh let's say, 10 million, would you do it?

I've never been a fan of Mardi Gras but it does make money for the city.

My view point on the flooding is that blame goes out into so many directions and touches every level of Govt and different political parties it just becomes counter productive to play the blame game anymorent.I fully support what we are doing in Iraq. I support the Reconconstruction money it much needed and will pay beneifits in the future. I think as to that issue freepers agree. I just dont see why the same logic doesnt apply here.
I guess I feel Louisiana is being used by outside interest of both parties for their own agenda. You hate Bush look at NOLA, if your a conservative and hate Dems look at NOLA. Also its easy to insert Louisiana in the place of NOLA and get the same result. What people forget and its bad is that every day is not election day. The insane partisan atmosphere that is in Washington is now affecting everything. At some point people have to work together to make the trains run on time as it were.

God in my humble opinion did not destroy Southern Louisiana and three weeks later Beaumount Texas because of few gay bars and over priced strip clubs in NOLA. Neither because Mississippi had gambling boats on its Coast.

So true. Imean the same logic applies for every city that has major events. For instance in Detrit You spend more money in city assets for the super bowl because of the net economic impact. It occurs on a weekly basis in this country.

Yes, I realized it was the media who were stereotyping from the first day after the hurricane.

But, inquisitive Freepers should have not swallowed the bait...hook, line and sinker.

Those folks on that bridge were people who were homeowners, job holders, criminals, welfare recipients, project residents...the mix of any city.

We heard nothing from the media of their heroism in surviving the unexpected levy break. I saw perhaps three interviews with folks who had worked all day and night to save those trapped.

And here on FR, I can always see the "Heineken" guy but never a pic of the elderly and children being floated on air mattresses to safety.

If you could spend 2.7 million to make, oh let's say, 10 million, would you do it? I've never been a fan of Mardi Gras but it does make money for the city. ----You know, my post was as follows:
My main concern would be to find a place to live for my citizens and jobs first. Looking for a place to hold Mardi Gras would be the least of my worries because after that is over, the people will still be in the same situation as before Mardi Gras was held. By that I mean the ones living in travel trailers, hotels, and on cruise ships. But that's just me. I take my priorities seriously.
You asked if I had 2.7 million and could make 10 million would I do it? If I had 2.7 million, then I would have a home and obviously a way to make money, so your post has NOTHING to do with mine. Mine was about priorities. And like I have said, it is ok to differ on what those priorities are. That is what makes people unique. It is OK to differ in opinions. It doesn't make one of us right and the other wrong. I said in my post "But thats just me". In other words, MY OPINION.

So true. This my perspective. In two days i saw the blame game going on. Its an unpopular now to say but a huge amount went right. The evac of NOLA was the best I ever saw. I evaced out of their in the late 90's when a big one was heading our way. It was chaos and less than half the city had left. The reason deaths were much lower is that so many people got out to give the State of LOuisiana its due the network of shelters, and local agencies going into action was a big part of it. My theme was its a Disaster. Disaster are not pretty.
What freepers on here fail to recognize and we did was the pure scope of devastation. Major areas could not be communicated with. That was a fact that both State and Federal agencies did not contemplate. My main point is I suppose that this isnt the beaches of florida down here. This is in large part a blue collar working class coast that has to live down here to get the jobs done. Once people realize we that abandoning the Gulf south because of hurricanes is not an option ,progress will be made. I hope

Of course my post has something to do with your post. The point of my post is this. If you don't have Mardi Gras you have 2.7 million to spend for housing and jobs for your citizens. If you do have Mardi Gras you have 10 million to spend for housing and jobs for your citizens. I'm just using those numbers as examples but I do know that if they have Mardi Gras they have more money to use to help their citizens. I would think most reasonable people would go for the extra 7 million. But, that's just MY OPINION.

What is with this...MY OPINION?

Of course it is your opinion because you posted in your own words. Now, do you expect folks to just not respond to your OPINION and be on their way?

Why are you being so defensive? I'm just curious.

Something tells me that this year's Mardi Gras will have a reactin to the "Chocolate" dreams of Mayor Ray nagin.

If you remember, the Mayor said he wanted to see New Orleans rebuilt as an all black city with few or no white people.

One wit asked, "If that happened, who would pay the taxes?"
