Norwegians more skeptical of Islam
Aftenposten (Norway) ^ | February 08 2006

Nearly half of those polled say they have become more skeptical about Islam as a religion after the global uproar around the Mohammed caricatures.

The result comes from a survey carried out by InFact for Norway's best-selling newspaper VG.

According to the survey, which was carried out on Tuesday, 47.8 percent of those asked said they were more skeptical about Islam, while 36.7 percent their opinion of the religion had not been affected by the caricature controversy. A small group of 6.5 percent said they were less skeptical about Islam after the turmoil.

At the same time, 30.8 percent say that they have become more mistrustful towards Norwegian Muslims after the caricature reactions, while 53.6 percent say their attitude towards this group has not been affected. About 6.8 percent said they were less suspicious of Norwegian Muslims after the controversy.

Fully seven out of ten polled said they expected Muslims in Norway to have a harder time in the wake of the international controversy.

The Hostage Crisis did indeed inform us that we were living in a brave new world, but without all the blood that has been spilled since then we didn't have the proper context in which to place it.

We didn't know jack about Islam at that time. We thought the Shi'ites were the bad muslims and the Sunni were our friends, after it was over. Then we find out that the Sunni's are just as bad as the Shi'ites. Or some of them are... and some of them aren't. Even then we didn't know what Wahabbism was. It's been a 25 year (at least) learning process for the American public.

I believe that they, at least, still have troops in Iraq.

Those were the muslims in the sample.

Actually, Norway has been a comparatively active participant in the War on Terror. Norwegian special forces have been operating in Afghanistan since the get-go (as one might imagine, they are good at high-altitude, cold-weather warfare). Hence, Norway has been specifically cited as a target in a number of al-Qaeda ramblings. Likewise, Norway has been restructuring its armed forces to act in concert with US forces overseas. They've scrapped their coastal fleet for large, long-range warships. They've also scaled back the army to make it a more professional force with increased SpecOps capabilities.

The problem with Norwegians is two-fold: (1) They don't understand what it is like to live in a heterogenous society, so they assume that any problems in America are the result of our racism; and (2) like most Europeans, they don't like Jews. Between these two things, the average Norwegian is ready to believe that Israel and America are to blame for the problems in the Middle East. However, the Norwegian military is pro-US, and various Norwegian governments prefer to work with the US, if only behind closed doors. After all, they're not in the EU, so they like the US as a counter-balance to the Eurocrats.

"Is the country headed in the right direction".

No, if you want to be a partisan you have a lot to learn. The proper question is "Do you think the country is headed in the wrong direction?"

"Give it a rest."

Am I wrong? Were those articles about Norwegian women making chastity belts to protect themselves fabrications?

Obviously your old enough to remember 9/11 and look how many are going back to sleep so soon after that Muslim led disaster.

Problem is our govt and MSM keep chalking these off as isolated incidents.

I was standing in front of the Iranian embassy with a tape machine and a microphone...and OUR students yelling "Down with Khomeni!" Holy smokes, that was another day. I remember doing a phone interview with the Iranian dep. chief of mission of the embassy after the hostages were taken, and this guy had nowhere to go. If he went home, he would be killed or at least imprisoned, yet he could not stay on with the embassy because the mullahs had taken control of the government.

Do you recollect who the president was when all of this happened? The whining wreck from Plains, GA, "Mr. Tower of Jello," Jimmah Carter.

Are you saying that Muslims DON'T commit 90% of the rapes in Norway? Because I believe they do.

"The average Norwegian is ready to believe that Israel and America are to blame for the problems in the Middle East. "

Interesting analysis. Thank you.
You bring up some things that should cause me to take pause, however, I still wonder about the "average Norwegian".

I've started wearing my Norway hat around this past week. On the front it has a shield made from the Norwegian flag and Norway written above.

Looks almost like the Danish Flag and for good reason (history).

Smiling while I'm waiting for someone to say something.

I was a freshman in college, and I recall that in the Student Union cafeteria, a bunch of American students surrounded a group of Iranian students and wouldn't let them leave. No one got arrested, but it made the college paper. We need more of that today.

That's just painful political correctness.

Yes.

Unless you are clueless, this is a "Pay me now, or Pay me later" predicament in which we find ourselves.

The Mullahs are pursuing Nukes, Machetes are producing adherents, the State enemies $$$ supply is growing, and although the drums of war have been drowned out by "religion of peace" propagandung for a short while, most of us realize that it's time to "roll".

(1) is greatly exaggerated, I think. But (2) is just wrong. The liberal media is pounding on Israel all the time, so there is (or was, until this week...) a certain popular support for the Pals. However, dislike of Jews as such is rarely heard of. In all my life I have met one true-blue anti-semite in Norway.

Unlike many other places in Europe, there were never a lot of Jews here and such hostility as existed against them was mostly religiously based rather than racialist. With the securalization of both Christians and Jews, most of this has evaporated, and the sympathy for Jews after World War did away with the rest. Norway was actually a closer friend of Israel than the US until 1967, having her embassy in Jerusalem and supplying Israel with heavy water and equipment for her nukes. This support has slowly dwindled thereafter with the perception that Israel is clinging on to her spoils of war.

Norway was occupied for five years and DID NOT LIKE IT, so there's part of the explanation; certainly more important than antipathy toward Jews. There is more of that in some other European countries that shall go unnamed.

So you're 80ish?

You could share some real life parallels with the Nazi cult, eh?
