This is in Ladakh. Three of my children and three grandchildren as well as my wife were there last year. The Buddhists are incredibly nice, and peaceful. They spent a good deal of time in Leh.
I'm just as glad they aren't there now.
Leh, and nearly all of Ladakh is overwhelmingly Buddhist. There isn't any separatism problem there. Besides, the Indian Army presence there along the Indo-Tibet(China) border and the presence of numerous forward bases won't let trouble go for too long.
Kargil, where this incident took place, is a border town along the Pakistan-occupied part of Kashmir. It borders the Muslim parts of Kashmir, and is violence-prone. About seven years ago, a major military operation took place there to flush out Pakistani Muslim insurgents who sneaked into the border during the summer snow-melt season.
