Lawmaker seeks border forces
The Washington Times ^ | 02/18/2006 | Jerry Seper

A Georgia Republican says President Bush needs to immediately order at least 36,000 federal troops to the U.S.-Mexico border to stop a flood of illegal aliens.

"There's no excuse for this. We know right now how to bring this flood of illegal immigration to a virtual halt within the next two weeks," Rep. Charlie Norwood said during a House floor speech this week. "We need somewhere between 36,000 and 48,000 troops immediately deployed to the southern border.

"We need the president to order the Department of Defense to fund the mission 100 percent," Mr. Norwood said. "And we need new legislation forcing the issue if action is not forthcoming."

Mr. Norwood has submitted legislation to give 600,000 state and local police officers authority to enforce U.S. immigration law, but it has stalled in the House Judiciary Committee.

this guy clearly isn't with the fedgov/duopoly party 'open borders' program, or he was speaking to any empty chamber and needs air time.

I would humbly suggest the 1st Cav, 10th Mountain and 4th ID. I am sure they can get it done.

Every year, Norwood, or one of the other congreemen from SE US, introduces a bill to put troops on the border. You should read it.

The bill notes that these troops would have to go to school before they could be deployed and it notes that these troops would be limited in what they could do because of posse comitatus.

As if there are 60,000 troops hanging around eating bon bons with nothing to do.

LOL!

I was trying to avoid the overdose of cynicism that has already shown itself on this thread! But I truly do think we are inexorably winning. And this is the first time I've heard an elected official use such strong language and have it be picked up on and repeated by the Washington Times.

Shooting at our border patrol, and smuggling drugs into the US by mex-military is an act of "war!"

Time to treat it as such, and send in the 82nd ABN, to secure the border and use all state and local law enforcement to round up the other 11 million illegals roaming our streets, and send them back to mexico, including the millions in our jails and prisons sucking up our tax dollars, and send the mex government the BILL!

There's no excuse for this. We know right now how to bring this flood of illegal immigration to a virtual halt within the next two weeks," Rep. Charlie Norwood said during a House floor speech this week.

Finally, a House member standing up and demanding the President enforce the law now! He is also flatly rejecting the “we can’t deport them all” excuses of Bush and other open border proponents. We need a majority of the House members to loudly call for the President to protect our borders and if the President refuses to perform his oath of office and enforce our democratically enacted laws then the House should bring impeachment charges.

Americans are being victimized everyday at the hands of criminal illegal immigrants and the President and Congress share blame in each and every crime an illegal immigrant commits as well as for all the economic harm caused by the illegal invasion of our nation. By his ongoing failure to enforce the democratically enacted laws against illegal immigration President Bush has shown his contempt both for democratic self-governance and the American people. His arrogant refusal to perform his constitutional duty should be met with the one remedy provided by the Constitution to protect the people against the usurpation of their legislative authority -- impeachment. It is now well past time for Congress to assert the rights of the American people to self-government

The problem with a border fence? It'll be a government project. That means 10 years of permits, paperwork and environmental impact statements. Then a 10 year construction schedule with union labor. Which means it will be finished in 20 years, with construction costs at 300% over budget, after which it will fall down.

This is unrealistic however. It doesn't inlcude the 15 years of court challenges. So this thing is 50 years away. Unless the US Army Corps of Engineers does it. Then it can be up before Bush Leaves office.

"I guess its better they defend Iraq's border."

Are you Cindy Sheehan?

Having done some quick estimating, based on Norwoods numbers, we could bring all the troops home from Iraq and Afghanistan and use them to militarize both borders, the coasts, and the ports.

There would even be enough troops left over to have the military manage port operations so we wouldn't need to depend on the UAE port operators.

BTW, is it its or is it it's?

"Are you Cindy Sheehan?"

No, but your personal attack has been duly noted.

"Having done some quick estimating, based on Norwoods numbers, we could bring all the troops home from Iraq and Afghanistan and use them to militarize both borders, the coasts, and the ports."

There are 138,000 troops in Iraq and Norwood is calling for 36,000-48,000 troops. How did you get those figures? He wants to control the flood of illegal immigrants, the numbers of illegals coming in from Mexico are not comparable to those coming in from Canada.

"BTW, is it its or is it it's?"

I don't know, but regardless, why did you remove my apostrophe from "it's" when you quoted me in your post #18?
