As is true today in the case of radical Islam, in the 1930s there was an agonizing reluctance for the US to acknowledge the threat of Nazi Germany and Imperial Japan and do something about it until it was almost too late. Then as now there were the Mineral Mans, sakics, melases who sought to downplay the threat and to accuse those who saw clearly the threat as racists or alarmists.

This enemy is little different because it is not confined to classic national or natural bounderies. That doesn't make it any less dangerous.
