The answer to the bug question is why I won't ever move to Florida...

People move here to the NC mtns from northern states, Florida, and California. When they get their first tax bill, they think it is their MONTHLY tax bill.

They are floored when they find out it is for the whole year.

You could find parking at the beach? You could get to and from the mountains without half a day in bumper to bumper coming and going? You could go to a park, with your kids, and not end up regretting it more than half the time?

Not sure what bummer deal you happened to experience, but down here in OC, it's so mundane, it's almost boring.

Parking lots in HB are 1% of capacity 90% of the year. (And of course, as every native knows, the nicest beach days are in the winter.) Even on the busiest summer days, you can usually find a spot.

People commute from the Santa Ana Mtns (eg Trubuco Cyn) on a daily basis - perhaps they experience some of that traffic you mentioned.

Parks in OC are peaceful and idylic - nice Little League fields as well.

Sound like you were living next to Inglewatts - any inner city rathole in any state would be like that, not just Calif.

We relocated to Indiana a few years ago...but my brother just moved to a suburb north of Dallas. None of my old friends live in CA anymore.

weak. What a bunch of cowards. If you run from money you will always be poor.

If you run to money, money will make you rich.

Thank God for the idiots.

Now you are giving away all of our secrets. LOL.

I used to head straight to the beach when I would come home on break from college. My college roommates, who were East Coast natives, always had trouble believing the sunny beach scenes in the photos I brought back to school really had been taken during Thanksgiving break.

I salute your income, sir. Anyplace is nice when you can afford it.

And that is the point. My 80k goes much farther in Collin County than it would in OC. My salary was basically living wage in SoCal.

And lets not even discuss the commute from HB to Downtown LA. It was bad enough from Lawndale.

"My sister and her husband bought a beautiful home in Mill Valley on Mt Tamalpais, in 1973, for $77,000 "

One of my brothers did the same thing, but in the late 60s.
His home was on a hillside, just above the main part of town.
After a divorce, he sold out in late 70s and moved to Paris.
He is a medical doctor, and now back in San Francisco for 3 to 4 months, substituting for another doctor.
He says he can not think of a worse place to be then in SF...He absolutely hates being there, and says the people are the worst he has seen anywhere.
All he talks about now is his desperation to get the H out of there.

If you want to save Texas send them back or your state will become like Kalifornia I kid you not.

Any Californian looking for a house near the ocean? My Dad's house 1 mile from the beach, less than 4 miles away from 2 mooring basins offering charter fishing for Salmon and Halibut. Less than 3 miles away from Ft. Stevens State Park that has over 8 miles of paved bicycle trails. Right in between Seaside and Astoria Oregon in Warrenton. 1680 sq ft house with new flooring throughout, new stainless kitchen appliances, new interior paint, and space for RV, boat, shop etc.
