Or is it something to do more with just politics?
I think you may well be right with your thinking that there is more behind this than we are seeing.

Democrats don't give a hoot about national security .. for if they did .. they wouldn't be running to the NYT and WP with all their leaks

Energy: Already a done deal, see Texaco, Chevron, etc. in both exploration and extraction. See Riady, Indonesia and Utah National Wilderness for coal.
Food, Clothing and Shelter: I've not investigated these industries in detail.
