So that was Tom Golds' and Fred Hoyle's objection? Perhaps you have a link to Gold and Hoyle's comments on the subject. (These were the primary opponents of the Big Bang theory.)

I bet he's thinking, "...better Gold then [Stephen Jay] Gould" (RIP, btw)

So how did Eddington feel about it?

...and oh, yes, I believe Lord Kelvin had some fascinating stuff on the age of the Earth & therefore by extension, the stars...

Yeah, just stirring the pot. (I can hardly wait until some of the less scientific on these threads start reading Kelvin...)

Lord Kelvin

Charles Darwin

PLEASE NOTE their common facial adornment. ;-) (Tee hee...)

Um... hate to say this... but the crushing that appears to be going on is under Shiva's right foot.

Caught in the act!

Or maybe I posted the picture backwards.

Or maybe that's why we have all these Creat'tards uncrushed, at least in their own minds.

Does nmh not even read his own material? Or is he just incapable of understanding it?

If you shovel fast enough, you don't have time to examine the contents of each and every spadeful of...stuff.

Cheers!

How do you know that Jesus Christ was not an extensive alegory?

He turned the water into wine, not beer...

She is a methamphetamine addict.

Awful scourge in rural & suburban America (in places one wouldn't expect). Sorry to hear about your half-sister - my hopes and prayers are with her.

I normally don't like Toles' work, but *THAT* was funny. (Especially the resemblance to the "ascent of man" in the creation presentations...)

Cheers!

Yeah, what you said.

But with fewer words.

I like klein bottles, but I'd rather see a tesseract.

Speaking of impossible objects, do you like "impossible" art? Shigeo Fukuda is my favorite.

If you can't get the images to load on that, here's another link or two that show some of his work.

My parents (and grandparents) used to tell me that there was no more pre/extra-marital sex going on in the 1960s to 1990s than in their day; however, they said that people did talk about it much more.

Mustafa Akyol.

Check out the relation between US creationists and Harun Yahya.

And check out the BAV in Turkey; they have been successful in suppressing teaching evolutionary theory in Turkish schools.

Quite possible. It could be that the additional freedom provided by the birth control pill led to more people talking about it, and not necessarily more people doing it.

I just did.

My cerebellum just fractured !

(Think of the ways one could spin this: the DU take that all Christians are just like the Muslims; THIS is why Bush refers to Islam as a "religion of peace" since it is similar to his "right-wing" base; to a refutation of the idea that social conservatives are strong on homeland security issues...)

What is odder still is that if they are "conservative" or "fundie" Muslims, the Koran has explicit instructions not to take Jews or Christians as one's friends...unless they are using the Discovery Institute as a trojan horse into the US...?

Cheers!

Why you of course. In #25 you said Catholics aren't Christians.

WTF?!?!? I absolutely flatly deny you to quote anything in #25 that is a Catholic bash. In 25, I said that it only took 16 posts before someone compared Christians to Islamofascists. Now, you might operate on a different paradigm than me, but when I use the word 'Christian' this generally includes Catholics.

I don't know how in the hell you managed to get catholic bashing from that. The word 'catholic' doesn't even appear in the post, nor does it appear in the post it was a reply to. You are off base. You are so far off base that you're not even in the same space time continuum as I am anymore.

You know the word analogy? This one's the geometric mean kind: me to you as you to LouAvul.

Still don't get it? OK, I will spell it out although I think my previous post was clear. LouAvul disparages *Creationists*. You accuse him of bashing *Christians*. But *Catholics*, who claim to be Christians, the original ones even, generally see no conflict between their faith and evolution, an old earth etc. etc.. Your post equates Creationism with Christianity. Creationists reject evolution. Ergo, in your mind, Christians reject evolution. Catholics don't. So, again in your mind, Catholics can't be Christians.

Now Catholics are certain to take offense to your implication that they aren't Christians. Great offense even. That makes it a bash. Since it is a bash of Catholics, that makes it a Catholic bash.

Yeah, just stirring the pot. (I can hardly wait until some of the less scientific on these threads start reading Kelvin...)

I've been told two or three times by creationists that Lord Kelvin showed that the earth wasn't old enough for evolution. They used an argument along the lines of "if nuclear fission is keeping the earth warm then where is it? Why aren't we all dying of radioactive poisoning?". Talk about wanting to shout, "GET AN EDUCATION, UNDERSTAND THE EVIDENCE, *THEN* JOIN THE DEBATE!"

If you click on the hypertext link in that earlier post of mine you'll see one of Kelvin's arguments.

On one of the earlier crevo threads one of the pro-cre (presumably young Earth) made a series of bullet points in support of a young Earth. Several of the bullet points argued from direct linear extrapolation in time of observed physical processes, apparently dismissing or ignoring the possibility that the processes were cyclical, erratic, etc.

OTOH, Kelvin shows that there were / are reputable scientists who questioned the age of the Cosmos (apologies to Carl Sagan); the proper answer to that is to show how further study has specifically addressed those concerns. Science if done correctly builds on itself over time, so there is a greater base of knowledge. Stuff that used to be Nobel work is sometimes taught now to undergraduates...

Cheers!

I've been told two or three times by creationists that Lord Kelvin showed that the earth wasn't old enough for evolution.

Even Lord Kelvin, though, argued (without allowing for radioactivity) that the earth is much older (on the order of tens of millions of years) than Biblical literalism allows. Citing Kelvin doesn't do much for creationism at all (except provide another attempt to confuse people; but I guess that's what all creationism essentially does).

They used an argument along the lines of "if nuclear fission is keeping the earth warm then where is it? Why aren't we all dying of radioactive poisoning?".

Someone actually asked you that? (Every cinder block in your basement; every piece of coal burned in a power plant is a source of some radioactivity; most of it reabsorbed and emitted as heat...)

Marie Curie was a lifelong atheist. I guess that conveniently makes the theory of radioactivity bunk along with evolution.

A typical fossil-fuel power station emits more radioactivity into its immediate surroundings than a (correctly functioning) nuclear plant is what I told them. I also asked them what they thought that "radiometric" thing that they despise so much is actually measuring?
