Still, I don't think it's at all unreasonable for Americans to be particularly concerned about Muslim countries becoming involved in what people perceived as a sensitive area of our infrastructure.

They perceived it as a sensitive area, because by and large they had no idea what the deal was about. Most people STILL think it was about selling ports to Dubai...though largely it has now gotten out that the U.S. government didn't sell the ports. Demogoguery blocked any sane discussion of the deal itself. After two weeks of the information being out as to what the deal was, there were still notable numbers of people here on FR that didn't know it wasn't a port sale. The demogoguery has overwhelmed everything else.

"deal makers don't make emotional decisions."

But subtle deal makers can think past the current deal. They may be willing to accept short term pain for long term gain. If, by buying Airbus, enough of a storm was created by Boeing and its lobbyists a similar situation might be preveneted in the future.

Not to mention Dutch Maersk (sp?). I actually think the next target will be Saudi Arabia - but it won't stop there.

Apparently it took the public time to wake up to the transaction. I follow the news very carefully right here on FR and elsewhere, and I didn't notice it in December. A google search shows the first link regarding this deal was February 8th of 2006.

That's right. The deal may have been covered extensively in the general media for the first time in mid-February, but anyone who is familiar with the shipping industry knew about it in late November. And for a guy like Rep. Peter King -- the chairman of the House Committee on Homeland Security -- to claim that he wasn't aware of this deal before mid-February means he's either an opportunistic, self-aggrandizing liar or he's too damned incompetent to serve in Congress.

Not quite sure what you are saying.

But if you are saying that UAE might purchase Airbus for reasons outside the economics of the deal (such as counteraction by Boeing and its lobbyists)...I think you are making a very clever point, but it seems like a stretch.

I think I hear what you are saying. Of course, politicians are, in part, opportunistic, self-aggrandizing liars (the best ones are able to hide those facts). My expertise doesn't extend to such matters and I don't have any personal knowledge of King's motivations...so I guess I shouldn't comment.

deal makers don't make emotional decisions.

No, no they don't. I agree. Only political hacks pandering to the masses make those.

We're desperately dependent on foreign investment to keep our economy floating. Which is what makes us THE GREATEST COUNTRY ON EARTH!

The job of DPW would have included loading and unloading cargo as well as hiring of personnel, both of which in my book are crucial to security.

By the way...by the time we get to your arguments, they are at least reasonable disagreement/alternate interpretations - you at least have some concept of what the portion of the deal that you are speaking on pertains to. The problem with this thing has been that it has taken place in an atmosphere of hateful delusion, where lots of screaming went on about things that no one ever proposed.
