Looks to me like the Serbs largely abandoned agricultural Kosovo during the industrial boom times in the north. The Albanians moved in to replace them in the agri-biz. Then the Serbs, in a burst of nationalism following the breakup of Yugoslavia, decided to reassert their control over Kosovo, and all hell broke loose.
There are towns all over California with names like Watsonville, that have been largely abandoned by the white settlers who founded them and replaced by a Mexican population that is still rooted in agriculture. If that white population came back with guns and dictated that the Mexicans should no longer have representation according to their numbers who do you think would have right on their side?
Keep in mind that this is not the first time that the population in Kosovo as swung between Serbs and Albanians.
The Serbs of Kosovo never recovered from the Nazi SS and Albanian genocide carried out on them during WW2.
Serbs were always the agriculturists. In Bosnia and in Krajina.
In fact one of the charges the Croat racists would use against the Serbs was that they were backwords farmers and the industrialists were realy Slovenians or others.
During WWII the Nazi-allied Albanians persecuted Serbs; half a million fled North. After the war, Tito (a communist) refused to grant them the right to return (buying political peace with the Albanian minority).
In 1989, of course, the communist Milosevic put on the nationalist mantle during a trip to Kosovo as a way of perpetuating himself in power.
His policy of repression in Kosovo worsened the problem beyond any capacity for a rational political solution. And, of course, when it became a detriment to continue supporting them, he pulled the rug from underneath the Kosovo Serbs as he had done in Croatia and then in Bosbia.
You're welcome.
