FIERCELY private Howard Stern became incensed when his former boss, CBS chief Les Moonves, included details of Stern's salary throughout the years in the 43-page lawsuit CBS filed against the self-proclaimed King of All Media. Stern was first signed by CBS Radio in 1985 for a now-modest $705,000. According to the CBS filing, by 1996, when his show was in all the top markets, he was making $39.1 million over five years with another $8.85 million in annual bonuses and stock options. When Stern's contract was extended in 2001, "the base compenation increased to over $58.8 million over the five-year term."
