Despite published reports, former President Bill Clinton says he and his wife always stood together in opposition of the United Arab Emirates port deal. NY1’s Rita Nissan filed this report.
There was no Clinton family feud over the Dubai ports deal. That's the word from the former president.
“I supported Hillary's position, and the news reports to the contrary were wrong,” Clinton said Tuesday.
These were his first comments since the controversial deal fell apart last week. He told reporters at an event in Harlem the agreement for a company owned by the United Arab Emirates to take control of six U.S. ports, including one in New York, was a bad one.
Clinton says that's what he told the company, Dubai Ports World, when it called seeking advice.
“I told them I couldn't understand why they wanted to do this, given all the problems we have with port security,” said the former president. “I thought there would be tremendous public and Congressional opposition. If they were determined to press ahead, I thought they should not push the process, but should open it up, and they should actually propose things that would increase port security.”
Clinton says he never asked anyone to support the deal, and he says Dubai Ports World never compensated him.
Clinton has been a cheerleader for the UAE and has made money there. He's delivered paid speeches, earning hundreds of thousands of dollars a visit. He's involved with a company that does business there, and the American University in Dubai even offers a scholarship in his name.
Clinton says he hopes some goodwill come out of all this debate.
“The real thing that can come out of this, now that the smoke's gone down, is that we will finally have a serious effort to do something about port security,” he said.
So the Clintons are on the same page, posing a united front as the Senator looks to be re-elected and maybe run for president. Public disagreements between family members never look good to voters.

Wow, don't you love the way ol' Bill backpeddles? LOL. It is amazing.................. As much as I can't stand Hillary it would be quite amusing to see Bill dragged back to the White House as "first house hubby" and all the embarassing moments that would create for Hil. She'd probably smack him with more than a lamp. OTOH, think of the women he could chase around the white house when she isn't looking (if she cares).
Looks like ole Bubba is entering John F'in Kerry territory here. He was for it before he was against it.
