A city-sized iceberg has broken off an island near Antarctica.
The iceberg is about 8 miles wide and 15 miles long. It broke free of the Fimbul Ice Shelf, a large glacial ice sheet along the northwestern section of Queen Maud Land, in the eastern Weddell Sea near Antarctica.
The discovery was announced Friday. The National Ice Center, using visible satellite imagery from the Defense Meteorological Satellite Program, spotted the iceberg now named named D-16.

Could someone please explain to me why such a comparatively small (8 mi. x 15 mi.) iceberg deserves any mention in the news???
For example, in 1956 the Coast Guard spotted an iceberg 208 miles long and 60 miles wide (twice the size of Connecticut). And in 1927, an iceberg 100 miles long and 100 miles wide was sighted.

OK, you are in charge of keeping track of where Ice Burgs are so ships will not run into them.
Your first job is to name the place where you work.
Waiting patiently............

I was thinking the same thing. Even if you lost 90% of of it, 8 x 15 miles turns into 4000 x 7500 feet - still a handy thing to have around.

If the iceberg hits an island, will the island sink? Is Australia, therfore, in danger??? You raise a good point. With as many of these rouge bergs floating around and especially having the enormous sizes that have been reported, you'd think that sooner or later one of them would have collided with a continent. After all continents are much larger than the side of a barn. Maybe we should think of them as mobile homes or RVs for penquins. |
