Family burger joint has recipe for success (Five Guys Famous Burgers and Fries).

What a lovely day Tosca Campbell and her daughter Angela Zier are having together. The women just had their nails done at Elizabeth Arden. Look at those nails, painted bright red. But truth be told, there is one more stop that will make their afternoon complete. They'd like a nice, juicy cheeseburger.

So off they go to main street in the stylish Kentlands development in Gaithersburg, bypassing the Thai place, the 1950s-style diner, Latin American food, Indian, sushi, Greek, even Starbucks. Their destination: Five Guys Famous Burgers and Fries, a little joint with all the charm of an RFK Stadium bathroom. The walls are tiled red and white. The floor is a cement slab, covered with peanut shells.

One has opened in the York (PA) area, right next to Burger King, and BK's lot is nearly empty these days. Anothef has gone in in the Lancaster (PA) area, and is doing very well. IMO, these are some of the best burgers and fries I've had since the 50s when Dad & Mom used to grill for my sister and me.

In Richmond they are not so good. Overcooked is the complaint but that might have more to do with local regs.

Any Freepers visiting the Washington DC area and looking for a good burger, I highly highly recommend Five Guys. The atmosphere isn't much, but the burgers and the fries are simply excellent! Come hungry!

Five Guys is pretty good. I am amazed at how fast they've grown!

The only time I went, I was served gray meat literally dripping with grease and limp, tasteless fries. Checkers is so much better.

So off they go to main street in the stylish Kentlands development in Gaithersburg

I'll have to give it a try... the Kentlands is a short walk from my house.

From the article:

"Four years ago, before franchising, Five Guys was just a little family burger operation with five locations and a steady, if cultish following, in Northern Virginia. Today the business is by some estimates heading toward $1 billion in value. Five Guys has 87 locations. Most are in the Washington region, but a hundred more will open along the East Coast this year, and another thousand are being phased in. Each store, the company says, pulls in about $1 million a year."

That's amazing growth.

Respectfully, you should notify the home office about the quality issue. Up here, they're perfectly done and quite tasty.

They opened one in Mt Ephraim, NJ. I really enjoyed their burgers. A little greasy but very tasty.

"That's amazing growth."

Yes, but it's an amazing burger. And the fries are cooked in peanut oil and sprinkled with old bay seasoning.

mmmmmmmm

Never had a chance to try Dick's Burgers, but I always avoid the large chains if I can, in favor of the smaller joints' menus.

These are the BEST burgers in the DC area.

We have one down the street from the office.

"Nifty Fifties" in Philly (4 restaurants) are THE BEST hamburgers, chicken, french fries and milk shakes on the east coast. And priced for a family.

There are places in Richmond where the only thing that they will serve you is a medium well burger. They claim it is state regulation and I have seen that in other areas as well.

The floor is a cement slab, covered with peanut shells.

There used to be some places like that out here in hicksville but the health department made them clean up. Seems as if health is more of a consideration than "charm."

Remember Wendy's ad campaign back in the 70?

"Thick and juicy. Lots of napkins."

Don't think greasy; think juicy. LOL.

When I grill burgers, I add 1-2 tsp of water to the ground beef, and insert a pat of butter into the center of each one. The result is JUICY!

Free peanuts is the best thing. The fries are good but I'm not a huge burger fan. You can get anything you want on the burger which is a good thing.
