France's political crisis grows as 3 million take to streets

Police fought running battles with rioters in central Paris last night as youths attacked officers with bangers, bottles and concrete at the end of a mass demonstration against a youth employment law that has caused a political crisis for Jacques Chirac's ruling party.

Trade unionists and student leaders said up to three million people took to the streets across France yesterday - the second time in eight days that the country has seen its biggest street demonstrations in almost 40 years. The protests, including one by hundreds of thousands of students and scholars who marched through central Paris, were mainly peaceful.

They were marked by a carnival atmosphere somewhere between a victory parade for the demonstrators and a funeral march for the "first employment law" as the ruling party prepared to begin negotiating its way out of the crisis.

Police fired teargas in Paris's Place d'Italie last night after groups of students and youths, some from the suburbs, attacked police lines.

Laugh all you want down under where you walk (and think?) upside down from us. But try to imagine a semi-serious attempt to reform social security or foo stams in this country. The entire state of Florida, Detroit, Oakland and Houston would be on fire, matey!

Dear me, that is a poorly-armed police force.

Typical European nuanced response to proposed change.

This isn't so funny.

France has nuclear weapons. Forget about what happened to the ones missing in the Ukraine. Start worrying about what will happen to the ones left in France when the Muslims take over!

Those bangers don't taste as good as our sausages. I imagine there are infinite varieties of them.

I just don't get it with these French. Haven't said too much, and employees deserve certain protections, but if people are not performing on the job well, an employer ought to be able to get rid of them.

We do have a lot of protected employees in this country, too, especially government workers. It's almost impossible to fire them.

Private sector employers can lay off employees pretty much at will if they aren't unionized. The worst that can happen is that they can get a discrimination suit slapped against them and/or they will have to pey unemployment benefits. That works kind of odd, too. They go back to your previous employer first. You might have quit that job and they still have to pay. If you did not do an adequate job or were a troublemaker, they did not have to pay unemployment if they fired you.

This business with the French has me stymied. Nobody should be guaranteed a job for life if they are not doing a decent job. That's why so many slacked off under communism; there was little incentive to perform well, and it bogged down their whole system.

Most Europeans don't seem to think like we do. I've read some of their comments and they look down their noses at our system. But they get ticked off when we can get consumer items they can't or have to pay a lot more for.

Yep! They need no help in this department. The only thing that will change them will be to get taken over by an outside power.
