The M109 Paladin is not going away. I have not read anywhere that that it will be retired. The US Army is not going to lose it's ability to put steel down range on targets.
Rumsfeld just didn't buy its replacement.

I'm sure you're right, the Paladin is an important weapon. But add a cooled howitzer, some composite armor, a gas turbine, full auto loading and advanced command and control...
