We left Chappaqua about the same time the Clintons moved in. The property taxes on a nice house (4 bed, 2.5 bath) was $14,000 5 years ago...that is more than I spend on my mortgage in Pennsylvania...the taxes and cost of housing are outrageous

I moved out of NY because of the twin savings-killers of housing costs and cost-of-living. Even on a six figure income you can't get into the market unless you already owned something before the price boom.

Our taxes in Putnam Valley on a nice 4br was $28,000 when we left in 2002. We are among the few who moved to NJ to lower our property taxes.

The property tax situation is outrageous. The price appreciation of the property can be negated by those high rates.

About a year ago my parents started researching vacation properties, as we used to live in NY they looked up properties on Long Island. We were surprised that many communities did not seem to be as expensive as we thought they'd be given their proximity to the ocean. Then we realized how high the property taxes were...case closed.
