Update: CIA Officer Fired for Leaking Classified Info to Media

WASHINGTON — A CIA officer has been relieved of his duty after being caught leaking classified information to the media.

CIA officials will not reveal the officer's name, assignment, or the information that was leaked. The firing is a highly unusual move, although there has been an ongoing investigation into leaks in the CIA.

One official called this a "damaging leak" that deals with operational information and said the fired officer "knowingly and willfully" leaked the information to the media and "was caught."

BINGO!! I think that would be the IG's office - we knew Pflamegate was a preposterous set-up from the start, and Mary McCarthy may very well turn out to have been instrumental in pushing if forward. Even if that wasn't her doing, she is nailed and hopefully will squeal like a stuck pig to try to reduce her sentence. There may well be others like her in the IG's office at CIA - sounds like Porter Goss is bringing down some serious whooping.

According to what we've seen above the McCarthy's live in Bethesda, MD so unless they have another home in Georgetown, DC (where the Wilsons live) it seems very unlikely.

The funny thing is the media will try and define all that are implicated as whistleblowers, yet us on the right and middle america, the fench sitters, will not buy it. Look for gains in house and senate seats in the fall, as this story grows with each rodent snared

As soon as the pubbies realize that this is political warfare and start acting like it, maybe the rats will be exposed. They just need a good coach to teach them offense for a change.

Devastating and damaging news like this can easily be glossed over by the MSM if the GOP lets it happen. The drive by media will want to give this story cursory coverage like they ALWAYS do when protecting democrats and enemies of the Bush administration.

A decision needs to be made to keep this story in the news, no matter what. The only bait the media understands is "scandal". Maybe it will be too irresistible to ignore.

Comparing to Nixon ... fired employee, Mary McCarthy .. failed the poly .. confronted, confessed .. including providing to Dana Priest. Andrea Mitchell: It is unprecendented in the CIA .. veterans tell her they cannot recall another officer being fired. Confronted her yesterday, marched her out the door. More likely that the person who has access to the info .. referred to DOJ.

Conceivable that McCarthy could defend herself using "whistleblower?" defense, but you sign that paper when you're employed by them.

This was not just Dana Priest .. secret renditions, at least a dozen unauthorized contacts ..don't know what other journalists got info .. this is one of many investigations.

"One man's national sec. secret is another man's whistleblowing," letting people know what's going on.

Is there a line of chronology? Pulitzer's made the CIA less than happy. Risen/ etc. - NSA - extraordinary recognition from the very top of the journalistic profession now being investigationed .. secrets that are so controversial .. what is the Americans right to know? Confrontation we haven't seen since the Pentagon Papers.

Goss upset -- sure that the WH was aware, but was Goss's initiative. Very clear that it is the posture of this WH, and it has had an intimidating effect on officials ..
