In the past the hijackers were armed and any spur of the moment intervention would have cost lives and led to the deaths of all on board.

There were probably hundreds of hijackings which had no deaths and only resulted in inconvenience. It is easy to say "If this then that" but that is not the way things are in life. As soon as the first plane crashed because of passenger reactions the American people would have been up in arms. It has no tolerance for death.

Yep, the hijackers were armed and rest of the passengers were not, hmmmm and yes probably hundreds of hijackings took place producing an environment of near normalcy when they happened, nothing to see folks just a little inconvenience, until four planes were hijacked and nearly 3000 folks were killed.

As an aside, I am amazed with the sheer number of people who got out before the towers collapsed, when they came down I thought we'd have 20,000 dead.
