Senate leaders reached an agreement yesterday on immigration reform legislation that would strengthen border security but also would allow millions of illegal aliens who have been in the U.S. for two years or longer to apply for citizenship. Derided by conservatives as "amnesty," the proposal could be amended but senators on both sides of the aisle say they doubt it will be dramatically altered. "Senate Republicans are united in their commitment to an open and full debate on multiple amendments," said a statement from seven Republicans who represent the full spectrum of positions on immigration reform. "We are willing to put differences aside so we can get on with the important work to be done securing our borders and grappling with the 12 million illegal immigrants currently living in our country," said the group that included Majority Leader Bill Frist of Tennessee, Sen. John McCain of Arizona and Sen. John Cornyn of Texas. "We are also in agreement that efforts to curtail the debate prematurely will only derail this process. We call on Senate Democrats to allow an open debate and votes on this complex and challenging issue," the statement read. Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid, with whom Mr. Frist has been negotiating for weeks, said he "welcomed" the return of the thorny bill to the floor.

In order to do this we would have to be mean. As we already know, no senator has the capacity to be mean. It's just FPC.

I don't know...an intense border defense seems pretty implausible to me given the present composition of the Senate and President Bush. The best we can probably hope for is gridlock until 2006 when hopefully (as in my previous post) we can get some more conservatives into office.
Of course, there's always the other possibility of the states using the National Guard as you've mentioned. I read Arizona is moving in that direction. Maybe Texas would do something, but the Socialist Republic of California is doing everything it can to ENCOURAGE illegal immigration.
It's indeed a total sellout. Rewarding the criminal invaders. Our country and its culture and heritage is being thrown in the toilet before our very eyes. After enduring decades of leftists poisoning the culture, here we now have many in our own Party equally contributing to our nation's destruction. It's just mind-boggling. I've been waiting years and years for our guys to finally get a handle on this ever-growing problem. The last thing I frankly expected was abject surrender. Words cannot adequately express my disgust. Other than, here we are at this point in history with Islamo-lunatics getting their hands on the bomb, and threatening massive global chaoe, and here we sit, on the verge of giving our country away. There won't be a country left to fight for. Just a borderless, balkanized way-station.
George Bush is just as repsonsible as the RINOs for this mess.
No...don't go vote Dem or 3rd party (yet) but we don't have to slather over Bush either.
Replace him and the RINOs and hope they do no further damage on this issue till after 08
how much effect folks lack of enthusiasm for this garbage affects this fall remains to be seen.

What would you do with a family of six that came here legally, kept their green cards updated and legal at all times, spent thousands of dollars and 15 years to gain citizenship for the whole family. Spit in their faces or a knife in the back?
Ahhh.... "Respectable" criminals, huh? (I will presume that these hypothetical parents paid for all that education out of their own pockets, even if they stole the K - 12 public schooling part.) I would congratulate them on being decent parents and then deport them.
Since Bush took office, over 6 million illegal aliens have been expelled from the U.S. - you think that is an "abject failure"? I'd give it a "C+" personally.

Don't get mad, get even! I don't know what state you are from, but you will probably have the opportunity to support a conservative in the Republican primary. I wouldn't send money to the RNC, because they'll use it to support the establishment guy (i.e. RINO). However, you can always give directly to your candidate. If you stop voting, you'll only further enable the libs and RINOs.
I think you're thinking of Stainman pardoning 104 FALN members. It didn't get much press, and I don't remember the details.
How about a third choice like part of the $70 billion tax cut?
So, it appears they are now separating Republicans and conservatives. About time they made a distinction.

I was warning FReepers about President Bush years ago. He's a big government guy through and through, because compassionate conservatism means making government more efficient at helping people. It isn't about getting government out of people's lives. You must admit he's even been pretty consistent on immigration. He's been in favor of a defacto amnesty all along, you know.
Nevertheless, President Bush is much better than the alternative. A lot of FReepers are saying they are so upset about the immigation problem, they are going to sit the 2006 elections out. That's just crazy! I mean, I understand their frustration, but letting the Dems take control because we only got 5% or 10% of what we wanted from the RINOs would mean we get 0%. We know what the Dems want and it's ALL bad.

Let's just hope nothing passes this year. After the Republican Massacre in the fall, things will be different.

In the primaries, they most definitely tried to eliminate him (they really, really don't like him, in my opinion, for obvious reasons--he's not one of them). As I recall, they only grudgingly supported him after we conservatives shot down Kirk Humphries, the RNC-annointed candidate, in the primary.
Remember, Bush and the RNC went all out for Arlan Specter and other RINOs. They really have a fondness for them, you know. That only means we have to work in our various states to beat the RINOs over both RNC and Democrat opposition. Really, it's the only realistic hope we have of winning. I might be banned for saying so, but that's how I see it. We've got enemies on both sides of the aisle.
