It's a sham. Just look at what they are proposing. Illegals must learn English. Really, and if they don't what are we going to do? They have to prove they've been illegally employed and pay back taxes for the five years since they invaded. What agency will be created to enforce and track this? What employer is going to admit he hired an illegal and pay back taxes plus penalties? What invader is going to say I just invaded last week? These guys are not serious about border security. If they were they'd follow the lead of Sheriff Arpaio in Arizona. Lock enough of them up and they'll self deport.

LMAO...hey, I've noticed that too. Seems like every time a thread about immigration comes up, there are about a dozen FRs who are FOR amnesty and FOR unsecured borders, that are sarcastic as all get out, condescending, comtemptuous to those who disagree with Bush, and insist on trolling the thread. I even heard one accuse someone of being drunk the other night. Why do you suppose they bother acting this way? They're really are so few of them, but It's getting old fast.

I got the impression, from one discussion I had on here with him when he had his radio show, that he is pro-"guest-worker". The problem, of course, is that no program will work if you don't secure the border! Do that first and then I will listen to possible solutions about how to handle those already here.

The speech has been characterized already as another attempt to make the millions of criminals infecting our nation and culture into citizens, but, the President will reiterate that we "won't call it amnesty....can't call it amnesty" but we know it is amnesty unless they are rounded up, detained (I prefer concentrated) while awaiting deportation (I prefer to kick out the less-than-Americans) and build a wall to keep out the free flowing sewer of less-than-American third worlders and defend the wall.

He will call the plan, "a guest worker plan". Guest workers? I guess from now on, according to the new improved English language, the burglar who breaks and enters your home will now be known by one and all as a "guest".

My money is on wasted airtime.

My predictions (these and five or ten dollars will buy you a cup of Starbucks coffee):

(1) He will not call for a border fence.

(2) He will not call for deporting illegals.

(3) He will announce new border security initiatives ... perhaps even involving the military.

(4) He will continue to press some sort of guest worker/path to citizenship approach.

If there is anything dramatic, it will be announcing the use of the military on the border. I heard on the news this morning that the Pentagon has been drawing up contingency plans.

I agree. This seems to be the main need for new law, and apparently it has been developed and tested and is ready to roll out. "But if you get a workable, non-forgeable I.D. system with instant verification, you will have gone a long way towards addressing the problem." The only other thing is the fence some want, but I think we will be calling that the Southern Dig before it is done.

If they would enforce the existing laws, they wouldn't need new ones....
They can't enforce the existing laws because the existing laws don't contain adequate mechanisms for enforcement. The laws must be changed.

The problem with existing laws is two laws were passed in the late 90s that made it much harder to deport illegal aliens. (The reason why you saw a huge drop in illegal alien deportation after 1998).

One law (i) (INA § 203(b)(2)(B), 8 U.S.C. § 1153(b)(2)(B)) required enforcement to give an alien the opportunity to prove they qualify for a work visa if they request it. By the time that process happens, the illegal falls off the radar. This law had good intentions in that it was written to bring more highly skilled immigrants in, such as doctors. But like most laws, the law of unintended consequences and loopholes caused more problems than good.

Worst of all is the The Illegal Immigration Reform and Immigrant Responsibility Act of 1996 (IIRAIRA). Under this law, deportation can be suspended if the illegal alien can prove that they have been in the US 'for a considerable period of time' and has 'good moral character'. Illegal aliens who fall under this are given the opportunity to apply for whatever work visa or asylum they may work for.

It's not all 'Bush's Fault' like so many want to keep saying. The problem we have with illegal immigration right now is the result of decades of bad laws, starting, and mostly due to LBJ (Hart-Celler).

Give the man a break. Isn't it enough that every move he makes is criticized - must you get down to the actual words too?

I expect there will be tons of freepers watching just to make jokes about what he says or to pick apart his diction, pronunciation etc.

So, they are looking for a punching bag and the President of the United States has to serve as their punching bag. That way - they have no responsibility for what is happening in the world - it is all his fault.
