While there is much to laugh at and condemn in this letter, such as “assuming” the Holocaust occurred, there is a method to Ahmadinejad’s madness.
There are several points in this letter that need to be understood within very clear and classic Muslim practice, adherence to the intonements of the Quran and the example of the Prophet. A few excerpts from the letter:
"These have prompted me to discuss some of the contradictions and questions, in the hopes that it might bring about an opportunity to redress them. Can one be a follower of Jesus Christ (PBUH), the great Messenger of God, Feel obliged to respect human rights, Present liberalism as a civilization model, Announce one’s opposition to the proliferation of nuclear weapons and WMDs, Make “War and Terror” his slogan, And finally, Work towards the establishment of a unified international community – a community which Christ and the virtuous of the Earth will one day govern, But at the same time, Have countries attacked; The lives, reputations and possessions of people destroyed and on the slight chance of the … of a … criminals in a village city, or convoy for example the entire village, city or convey set ablaze."
Understand first that Islam accepts Christ as a prophet of Islam preceding Mohammed who is "the final Seal of the Prophets"...

Excellent article. I think most rational observers who are familiar with radical Islam recognize that this may have amounted to a declaration of war. But the mainstream media--even Fox News--is ignoring this and either treating the letter as humorous or an "interesting" attempt to open a dialogue.
How does the saying go? No one is so blind as he who will not see?
Did he leave out the part where the USA could obliterate his sorry ass along with the rest of Iran within twelve hours? Just curious.

I read this several hours ago and that's exactly what it is according to the dictates of the islamic brotherhood set u in 82'. It(the letter) is basically a prelude to war, a sort of warning first and then the attack which according to their plans can last up to 100 years.
These terrorists/religious wack jobs, think in terms of long term strategy, they don't demand instant gratification like we have grown fond of here.

promoting democracy, education and freedom of speech and religion are the theoretically greatest tools. These are americas greatest assets which have made america great. the supporting infrastructure did not happen overnight. this evolutionary process has 250 years of development into it.
thus the fight in iraq will last a minimum of a couple of generations until a couple of generations of children have washed through assuming positive effect. there is no way you can inject freedom overnight, in half a life, nor a full life. they have 1400 years of codified inertia.

I do not think that is correct. Jizya is meant for other monotheist minority religions within Dar al-Islam, i.e. Christians and Jews. The US is in Dar al-Harb. I think the next step is war.
The Iranians could raise a lot of Hell, if they want to pick a fight. They could jack up oil prices, stop oil commerce, activate some loser would-be terrorists in the US and seriously threaten Israel. This would result in a temporary burden on the US economy, a lot of pissed-off Americans and a scorching response from Israel. Unfortunately this is exactly what the mad President wants. I hope whoever responds first makes a serious dent in his ego and in his ability to wage war. A great big smoldering dent.

If I were President...
I would have called a press conference to answer the letter.
I would have put Ahmadinejad's invitation to Islam on the ground and stomped on it with both feet.
I would then have had a tank run over it in the Rose Garden one page at a time.
Then I would have peeled it off the treads and sprinkled it with pig lard and feces and set it on fire.
Then I would have put the ashes back in its envelope marked "Return to Sender", along with an engraved invitation to Gitmo.
