"You consistently advocate "punishing" the more conservative candidate who failed to live up to expectations, so that the flawed conservative looses to his/her more Liberal opponent."

No, I advocate not voting for liars who told us one thing and did another.

"Reagan won by a landslide his first election as well. As you recall the MSM announced him as the winner somewhere around 7pm."

And he won by bringing a conservative message, going to the people, and he did it against overwhelming Democrat odds.

"That we got more conservative legislation passed under Clinton as opposed to President Bush is highly debatable."

I don't believe that is what I said. I said, or meant to, that Clinton signed some good legislation because the Republicans fought like Hell to get it. He did sign 7 of the 10 items in the CWA into law.

"No, you advocate that the Republicans give up their majority status to minority status, because you believe they are more effective as a minority party. Would we have gotten what appears to be two conservative Supreme Court Justices, if the Democrats had been in power? No, two more Liberal appointees would be there instead."

No, you are wrong. I said that we were very effective as a minority. We lost that effectiveness when we became the majority. That's not the same thing as advocating being the minority. In fact, following my plan would lead to conservative majorities for generations to come.

I have also advocated abandoning the liberal positions and the politicians who try to hide their liberalism behind the party label. If we took one side of the issues, rather than both sides, we would attract more voters and be a more effective voting force. How can we expect to be effective in winning elections when we are constantly at odds with ourselves? The Dems are rotten, but they are consistently rotten and their issues are not in conflict with each other. The GOP thinks that their big tent can be filled with pro and anti abortion people; pro and anti gun people; fiscal conservatives and tax and spender liberals; big government socialists and small government advocates. The GOP is schizophrenic. A party based on conservative values would again win landslide victories. Our values are better. Our values work. All we have to do is not be afraid to run on them and shake loose those who don't believe. They can always come back when they do believe.

"This is not the Democratic Party of the 60's, but the nutso, whacko, abortion party of the new millennium. We cannot afford to return such a party to a majority party particularly when we are engaged in a war the Democrats now strongly oppose."

It seems that you and I are the only ones in the GOP who know that. If that means as much to the GOP as it does to you and me, maybe they'd take corrective action. As long as we don't stand up and demand better; as long as we run to defend them when they stink (in so many ways) as bad as the Dems, they will never change. They have their cake and they are eating ours.

"My preferred method is to get the most conservative candidates elected."

Republican doesn't mean conservative. Can you give me 3 national races where the GOP supported a conservative when his primary opponent was a RINO? I'm sure that it has happened once, maybe even twice. I doubt that it has happened 3 times. They always support the more liberal, go along to get along RINO over the conservative.

"Your preferred method, is to get the more Liberal candidates elected. And no your strategy was implemented before. It gave us 8 years of Clinton, and a strong possibility of 8 more years with another Clinton. Under him (it wasn't bit by bit) we reaped lots of evil in 8 years time."

You're having trouble reading and understanding. I want to rid the GOP of liberal candidates and liars who claim to be conservative. I didn't support Perot. I knew what he was, but that goes to show you that people will take their anger out on a man and his party that lies to them.

Now, if you know that and I know that, shouldn't the GOP know that? Yet they still pretend to be conservative and make false promises just to win. It's going to bite them in the ass again UNLESS they can scare enough people into covering their lying asses. I'm not sure that it'll happen this time around.

Fool me once, shame on me. Fool me twice, shame on you.

"We aren't surrendering to the enemies within the party, we are leaving some of that fight for another day."

Nice spin but it doesn't fly.

"But you are surrendering to the GREATER enemies outside the Republican party."

See above. You're just plain wrong.

"Our TWO most prominent great enemies are the Democrats and the terrorists. And our second enemy has at times been most supportive of our first. Not a good idea to allow them to again become a majority party, particularly now for that reason alone."

You missed two huge enemies. Those invading us on our Southern border and the Party that is accomodating it -- the GOP. The GOP has shown no interest in cleaning up their own act and dealing with ALL of these problems effectively. I have to ask why?

"In the American political context which is a two party system, it is better to fight one party at a time. I choose the Democrats."

The two parties are more aptly described as two wings of the same party. Just as you and I disagree on tactics and strategy, so do the Dems and Pubbies. They are both taking us to the same place -- Socialist Hell. We must fight them both. They have their interests in mind, not ours.

"Mostly everyone (except our leaders Republican or Democrat) is in agreement on the above. We the people, at least realize this is a two pronged fight and the borders must be sealed in addition to our battle overseas. But UNITED 93 reminds us that we are in a war against a common enemy, the terrorists and their Leftist supporters, and we must focus our energies against them not the Republican Party."

The leftists could watch 9/11 all day every day and still say that it was Bush's fault so that they could win reelection. They believe their own lies and Bush and the GOP has done too little to dispel the lies. Bush has been too busy cozying up to Clinton. I have to wonder what's in the files that the Clintons have on both Bushes. If you have people within the leadership who won't challenge the lies, there has to be a reason. And as long as they are there, we have little hope of winning anything.

"There is so little maneuvering room in American politics, we can focus our energies on only ONE party,(and the WOT) or we will lose the battle against both. We can pick off a Specter-like Republican here and there, but if Republicans again become the minority Party we will lose everything."

I totally disagree. It is the Specters who have hamstrung Bush, yet Bush went out of his way to support him. WHY? Cleanse the party of the rats within and we can then move forward aggressively and win.

For what it's worth:

I was very surprised by the scandal surrounding Don Sherwood. He had been a respected businessman in the Scranton area for many years before becoming a Congressman.

Sherwood was a good friend of my uncle. When my uncle died, Sherwood came to the viewing. He didn't announce himself, but just got in line with 300 other people, waited a few hours, and paid his respects. At the time, my very conservative extended family had only the nicest things to say about him.

Anyway, the man must have had a midlife crisis and got seduced by the Washington, DC scene. At least his indiscretion didn't involve the taxpayer or the courts.

If I hadn't met the man, I'd join this board in calling him a scum. But from all I've heard, I can only come to the conclusion that he's a good man who made a grievious mistake. If he owns up to it, I might consider giving him another chance.

I did say "might." I honestly thought he was one of the good guys, so I was very disappointed by what he did.

Thanks for your insights.

I too could dismiss a brief encounter. Ego and passions can get the best of you. That would be a mistake. The fact that it lasted 5 years is not a mistake but a deliberate choice to behave that way. It's unforgiveable even if the Mrs. forgives him.

You assume that it didn't effect the taxpayers. Maybe it didn't, but do we know if any of his votes were effected because someone knew his secret?

Not only did he betray his vows (even if his wife knew, approved of it, or even if she was involved in it) but he put himself in a position where he could be compromised in order to keep that secret. He owes his constituents AND the country honest representation and that is now in question.

It's a shame the voters don't believe that they deserve better or can do better for themselves. It's dismaying that 2 self professed Christians condone such behavior in order to maintain a political majority.
