President Bush is continuing the homeland security dog-and-pony charade in his quest to deliver a massive "guest worker"/amnesty plan to the open-borders lobby. A few weeks ago, Bush's Department of Homeland Security put on a bogus performance of Get Tough Theater with a series of politically timed immigration raids...which, as I predicted, simply resulted in more catch and release of illegal aliens nationwide.
This new last-minute stunt to sprinkle National Guard troops on the border--temporarily, of course, to appease Mexican President Vicente Fox--is more transparent than the Scotch tape used to hold together our dilapidated border fences. (That's only a slight exaggeration.)
For all the new tough talk, these additional troops will be barred from actually doing what needs to be done: guarding the border. President Bush is already bowing and scraping to Mexico over the plan before he's even officially announced it. More details via WaPo:
Officials suggested their mission would be to play a supporting role by providing intelligence, training, transportation, construction and other functions, while leaving the actual guarding of the 2,000-mile line separating the United States and Mexico to the Border Patrol. The National Guard would be a stopgap force until the federal government could hire civilian contractors to take over administrative and support functions from the Border Patrol, freeing more agents to actually hunt for immigrants slipping into the country. Hold up. It's been nearly five years since the Sept. 11 attacks. It's taken the Bush administration this long to acknowledge the need to hire more civilian contractors to relieve the Border Patrol of administrative and support functions?
Only now, on the day the Senate revisits his favored, faltering pet proposals for mass amnesty, does he find it important enough to send a show of military non-force down to the border--

Correct .. but my point was the States haven't discourged them from coming over here and they haven't done much in helping to get the illegals out of here
Yes it is. He's the head honcho and it's his job, under the US Constitution to protect the borders. Before him, it was Clinton's Responsibility, and before that it was Bush 1 and before that it was Regan.
The States failed to handle the problem YEARS AGO and now want the Feds to bail them out
The states can only do so much and it's the Feds that failed the States.
When is Bush going to support what people are asking for? I have seen the polling on this and Bush and the Senate are out of touch with most Americans not even to mention conservatives. Why is this long standing issue that everyone agrees has been a mess for so long, so hard for Bush to do the legal and morally right thing?
She is the messenger for many of us. Read this article by the Heritage Foundation and get back to me: Senate Immigration Bill Would Allow 100 Million New Legal Immigrants over the Next Twenty Years
Whoa. That's the damn scary part of this whole thing, domestically. Teaching the pubbies a lesson is not what voting is about, though teaching them a lesson in such a way means letting the Dems gain control again.
Sorry, that dog don't hunt. As a matter of fact, the cur will bite your ass.
The Dems want us to self-immolate, and we're apparently happy to oblidge them. They are playing this to their advantage, they love it, and they have no intention of fixing the illegal immigration problem.
As I have said, it isn't about closing ranks, it is about doing the best we can. Pubbies in power will do better (albeit perhaps pitifully) than Dems in power. If we hitch our wagons to a 3rd party horse, the likely loss defaults power to the Dems. No way, man. No way.
You mean the states can't stop the funding of social program for illegals in their own states .. they need the federal government to do it for them??
Today's GOP is way, way off the "conservative homestead:" not adequately insisting on/fighting for conservative judges; spending money hand over fist (both in the area of pork and government); growing government faster than the dems dreamed they could; and now, unwilling to stand together and defend the terminal deal, border security, or much of anything else..."let them hang separately" is sounding better and better.
This prez and Congress, together, have squandered an opportunity it could be said took 25 years to bring about. The odds are, after this debacle, it will be another 25 years before it happens again. Shame on them and/or shame on me, because I voted for them, letting them do it to me(us).
"When is Bush going to support what people are asking for?"
Apparently, some of that starts tonight. One NEVER gets everthing they want when it comes to politics, and what is gained is not all at once.
"I have seen the polling on this and Bush and the Senate are out of touch with most Americans not even to mention conservatives."
Less so, however, than the opposition. We must do better, but we can also do worse.
"Why is this long standing issue that everyone agrees has been a mess for so long, so hard for Bush to do the legal and morally right thing?"
Perhaps it is because even when he does (NSA for example) it gets turned around on him. Would you lay all your weapons on the table when dealing with a dishonest enemy? I'm hoping he's holding back a reserve.
It has to do with political expediency. However, in 1994 Barbara Boxer was was pushing to put the national guard at the border. You can't lay the blame for the flood of illegals on the states. It is the federal government's responsibility to enforce our immigration laws. They are the ones who make the laws and should be held accountable. If we had secure borders, the illegals wouldn't even get into the States.
The States are paying most of the costs of illegals, i.e., social services, medical care, prisons, and education. The Federal government should be reimbursing them for these expenses since it was the Fed's failure that they are here in the first place.
Technically, the Feds failed, then the states and now the Feds again.
No, I mean exactly what I said.
Yes, the States can do more, but it's the Feds that have failed the States.
Get 20K NG on the border now! Build the dam fence, enforce the CURRENT law (catch and release is for Steelhead) and QUIT GIVING free everything to the illegals.
It was passed under Pete Wilson at the end of his term. Grey inherited and shipped it to a lib judge.
The federal courts have ruled that you can't deny them services. Remember California prop 187?
You're quoting Boxer?
I'm getting a headache
IIRC that was never appealed
I am showing you how the debate has changed since 1994. Boxer was using the issue against Wilson who was against sending troops to the border.
