Feinstein and Jeff Bingaman, D-N.M., prevailed 79-18 on an amendment to reduce the number of low-skill guest worker visas from 325,000 a year to 200,000 and to remove an automatic escalator that would have increased the low-skill visas by 20 percent each year that the ceiling was reached.
The Heritage analysis added up all the provisions of the 616-page Senate bill and extended them over 20 years, producing a mid-range estimate of more than 100 million new legal immigrants -- a third of the current U.S. population -- if the guest worker programs grow at 10 percent a year and workers bring their families as currently allowed.
"It all adds up to millions and millions of people," Feinstein said.
Feinstein said she would like to eliminate the 20 percent escalator in the H1B skilled visa category as well.
"It's simply too many," Feinstein said, adding the H1B category -- which has stirred controversy among U.S.-born engineers -- could generate 3.67 million foreign workers over the next 10 years.

I wish I were more optimistic about this issue, but I'm not.
I need more coffee, for a start.
Catch you soon!
McCain is a schitzophrenic.
I will never vote for him, not just because he is unstable, but because he has been one of the main protagonists to the conservative agenda the past six years, despite how his voting record might be (and I dont care to look because the damage he does by cow-towing the media is much more damaging than how he votes.
This is why socialism doesn't ever really work. Those who create wealth ALWAYS must outnumber those who consume wealth. It is no wonder that so many socialist countries end up totalitarian.
"It is my understanding that this bill covers only one type of visa and that there are many different types of visas"
Yes, but it covers the most important kind of visa- the one for unskilled workers. The other visas are mainly for skilled workers, those with extraordinary talents, etc.
Right. The final step is always imprisoning within the country those who don't like the idea of supporting the less talented and/or less ambitious to keep the system from falling apart.
This would be funny if it weren't so damn serious. These fools are re-writing US Code (8 USC) to solve a problem that was caused by failure to enforce law that has already been codified!!!!!
They also amount to an army of wage busters against the poorest working Americans who aren't union.
No doubt that's true. "Scab" immigrants (legal and illegal) have always provided that counterbalance to organized labor costs and government taxes and regulation. All the way up and down the line we've all taken shortcuts. Who has not worked once when very young under the table? Why file with the IRS, I probably wouldn't owe taxes anyway. Then there's the small busineses. Who can afford minimum wage? Who can afford FICA? Who can afford to check to see if this ratty social security card is valid? Health insurance? Be serious. And then the mega corporations... the smart ones don't hire illegals 'cuz you can go to jail for that. But they do hire those small buisness who hire illegals. No questions asked. What right do they have to check someone else's business? Why should they pay for that? They are trying to cut costs by outsourcing.
So like I said, all the way up an down the line throughout history we've cut corners "to get the job done" which is one reason we are so prosperous. But it is a deal with the devil, is it not?
Clip from article: Guest worker provisions include not only the visa program for low-skill workers but also an expansion of H1B visas for high-skill workers, many of whom are employed in Silicon Valley. The H1B visa is the primary U.S. work permit, a nonimmigrant classification used by a foreign worker who will be employed temporarily in a specialty occupation.
Of course, if they were attornies rather than tech workers he'd be singing a different song.
Proving to me, and it's just my opinion, that it's nothing more than a ploy for ratings on the part of our so called Reaganites on the radio.
In a country of 300 million people, we surely can work out how to get our own work done. This isn't the UAE which only has a population of 1/2 million and needs to import people.
Look at where they're from, California and NM...that's why they proposed this, their states are really feeling the impact of immigration.
Maybe more to the point is that both CA & NM have large computer industries in their states & significant #'s of foreign (non-Hispanic) workers--skilled workers with H1B visas are competing with natives for silicone valley jobs. I suspect that those are the squeaky wheels they're (really) responding to.
HOW MANY OF YOU HAVE EMAILED AND PHONED THE WHITE HOUSE TODAY TO EXPRESS YOUR TOTAL DISAPPOINTMENT WITH THIS?
NO TO HAGEL - MARTINEZ BILL !!!!
By amnesty I'm assuming you mean citizenship. I'm not surprised at all. It makes good sense from their perspective. Citizens earn the minimum wage and can be unionized. Illegals get what they get and of course don't pay union dues.
