Had Bush 41 known that the tax-hawks would never forgive him, no matter what, after he raised taxes, he would have stalwartly refused to have done so. But he underestimated the strength and depth of passion on taxes of the tax hawks.
He thought a war-winning president who was at 92% a year out from the election just couldn't lose.

I also forgot the MOST important factor in Bush 41 losing the middle: the "recession" that ended in the spring/summer of 1992 that the media reported as the "worst economy in 50 years", right up until election day. I remember being surprised, when the data came out later in 1993, to find out we had all been duped.
