Though immigration is a real, ongoing problem which has been with us for decades, I find this sudden, strident, venomous interest in it from people who never made a peep during the eight years of the Clinton administration suspicious

It's pretty simple, actually. There is actual legislation on the table and Bush is pushing the Senate version over the House. Things tend to get quite a bit more heated when it goes from rhetoric to legislation. No conspiracy required.
