I was an Army brat so local speech patterns didn't much phase me. In 1976 I brought my pregnant wife, from northern Minnesota, eh' (I mean northern, they thought Minneapolis-St.Paul was where the Mason-Dixon Line was), to Elizabeth City, NC.
I spent the first year interpreting for her and the locals. I still remember that look on her face when a waitress offered her Hush Puppies.
