If someone illegally used your SSN, all the benefits should go to you, not to them. This is one reason everyone should check with the Social Security boobocracy regularly to make sure no other employer has been listed than those that you have worked for.

Well, since virtually every illegal alien who paid into the system was using someone else's (or made up) number, how do they plan to sort that out? Will benefits for a given number be given to the first to file a claim? Or perhaps preference will go to the first Mexican who files a claim for a particular number.

No. You need to contact the SS Admin. re: what you have paid in and what they have on record that you'll receive. They'll mail you a report/summary. Keep a close eye on what shows up on it. If you see any discrepancy re: past employers, I would report it immediately. That's all I know to do. Someone else here might be more knowledgeable about how it works.
