AP: "Too Close to Call"

NEW ORLEANS — Voters were deciding Saturday whether incumbent Mayor Ray Nagin or challenger Lt. Gov. Mitch Landrieu should oversee this city's long recovery from Hurricane Katrina — one of the largest reconstruction projects in U.S. history.

Whoever wins the too-close-to-call election takes office a day before the June 1 start of the next hurricane season in a city where streets are still strewn with rusting, mud-covered cars and entire neighborhoods consist of homes that are empty shells.

What's that latest update about? Have we gone from counting a Nagin precinct to counting a Landreau precinct? Quite a differential swap in just a few thousand votes.

I think we can call Clarkson as losing. Not that I know anything about the race, but down 19% with 54% in, is a wrap.

It is back down to 51-49. Unless someone knows the racial makeup of the precints remainig to be counted, the race cannot be called. Nagin did move up some, in the later counting, in the primary.

Fox 8 is showing Nagin up 54%-45% with 59% of the precincts in:

Nagin 25,119
Landrieu 21,369

They also have "Nagin Projected Winner" splashed across the screen.

It is I mean whats makes this race interesting is there is good percentage of the black and white vote that I think was undecided till the last. Its just enough to keep it in play thoughout tonight .

Did they toss out 6000 votes between 55 and 59 percent of the precincts reporting?

How many registered voters are there for this election anyway? I'm looking at these vote totals - over 50 percent of the precincts reporting and fewer than 50,000 total votes cast. It sounds like a lot of people aren't even bothering to vote.
