Many thrilled to see their president (Vicente Fox in WA State)

When...Mexican President Vicente Fox stepped out of a green Chevy Suburban...about 200 local immigrants remembered where they came from.

Mexico.

"I feel so emotional because it is my president," said 62-year-old Catalina Fernandez, who moved to Pasco 31 years ago. "To meet him, to see him — it gives me such pleasure."

But Fidel Marquez..."We want to say hi to the president,"

When the speakers had all taken their turns at the microphone and the audience stood to watch Fox leave, Marquez said he enjoyed Fox's comments, but was a bit alarmed to learn that factories in Mexican border towns are short 100,000 workers.

"That was a surprise for me to know that in some places there are more jobs than people who want to work," he said.

It surprised Ariana Hernandez as well.

She was 5 years old when she, her two brothers and her parents moved to Washington illegally from Veracruz to join other illegal workers picking apples in Wenatchee.

Still, the 16-year-old Wenatchee High School junior feels connected to the place she was born.

So Wednesday, she and her father, 52-year-old Valentín Hernandez, hopped on the bus to Yakima to hear what more Fox can do for the people living in Mexico before he leaves office at the end of the year.

And Hernandez said she was pleased to hear that if she chooses to return to Mexico, she will find a stronger economy and better health care and education systems.

Because when the mariachis play their brass tunes and the president promises that Mexico misses the millions of its people who now live here, it's a possibility she considers.

"I miss you, too," she said softly. Then she boarded her bus back to Wenatchee.

Import Americans after all it is work that Mexicans won't do, but Americans will.

If there is anyone out there who disagreed when I said they are not coming here to become Americans . . . now do you believe me?

Mr. Fox is an elected President of a republic with whom the U.S. does not have hostile relations [1]; it would be discourteous unreasonably not to address him with his proper title.

I was thinking, however, many of these Mexicans would never get a chance to see President Fox in Mexico, D.F.

[1] Strained relations, but not troops on the border shooting at each other yet.

Would Teddy Roosevelt have put up with this humiliation?

Victor Castro owns 40 acres in Tonasket, Wash., near the Canadian border. He leases another 40 and grows apples, pears and cherries, but says he has trouble finding people to buy his apples locally and believes he could sell them to Mexico.

I just don't buy this.

No, but apparently George W. Bush feels that a way to show his manliness is to let the tinhorn oppressor from a pathetic disaster area of a country run around in this country and puff up his chest and act like a conquering hero. Guess being upstaged and hectored by this guy is just a butt kicking little Boy Blue is willing to take.

In addition to the weakling U.S. Senate bowing to his demands. Maybe Fox threatened to take away their lipstick so they'd have to be on television without it. Oh The Horror.

Gotta hand it to Fox. He knows girly men when he sees them, and how to hold them down.

Pretty funny. In Mexico, they all get the symbolism. Right now, they're looking at each other with those knowing grins....these gringos are Butt Boys who can be had.

One thing about Mexico and Mexicans. They won't let an opportunity like that walk by them.

Yeah, these criminal invaders are JUST like all those 19th century era immigrants who came here to work hard and live the American dream. I mean, Irish-Americans still wave the Irish flag, right?

Likewise, our friendly undocumented guest workers still refer to Vicente Fox as "our President" even if they haven't lived in his country for decades. I'm sure you'll find lots of Irish Americans who proclaim "I"m soooo excited to see Mary McAleese, she is MY president." For example, ummmm, eh... well... ah... nevermind.
