England afraid to fly its own flag

Following threats by extremist Islamic group, several corporations, chain of pubs ban England flag

Following warnings by extremist Islamic group al-Muhajiroun, in which the group said that the red cross in the England flag symbolizes the 'blood thirsty crusaders' and the occupation of Muslims, some of the largest companies in England have ordered their workers not to wave the flags.

The flag has recently appeared in England on everything from bikinis to cars, and sold in endless versions in stores.

But the Islamic protest forced some corporations, such as cable companies NTL, Heathrow airport in London, and even the Drivers and Vehicles Licensing Agency to ban the flag in every form due to fears from reactions of Muslims.

The Sun tabloid newspaper has in recent days launched a campaign to bring back the flag, and has published a blacklist of companies preventing their workers from expressing their patriotism at work.

The Sun said that a large pub network has banned drinkers from entering with symbols of the national team.

The hero of the day is a two year-old toddler, who was thrown out with his parents from Leicester, because he wore the England team's uniform.

Okay, that's just sad.

I can see "not" going out of your way to offend Muslims, but if they're offended by something that is normal and everyday-ish, then that is their problem.

All this does is accustoms them to thinking that the new state of affairs is normal, making them more likely to be offended by the British flag when it does appear in public.

Coming to the US soon. We already "can't" fly the confederate flag because the left decided it was racist - oh about ten years ago when the south started going GOP. Now some high schools have been warning students that displaying the US flag is "provacative".

But banning the Confederate flag was just fine with some alleged "Free Republican". Pointing out that it was merely a precedent setting move aimed at the US flag...was pooh-poohed. Then they wanted the Marine to take down his USMC flag....then the US flag.....precedent is now set.

I'm just idly curious. Are there any Moslems left that aren't nuts?

And here in the United States, our flags and patriotic clothing are being banned in schools so that illegal aliens don't get offended. Doh!

How does it go . . .

What have I not done for thee, England my England?
What would I not do for thee, England my own?
Eldest daughter of the Lord,
Spouse in Chief of the Ancient Sword,
There's the power of the Word
In the sound of your bugles blown, Oh England,
Out of Heaven on your bugles blown.

Don't die with a whimper, England, get out there and bash some ragtops.

The reason for all the flags is this is World Cup (soccer) season, and it seems really, really wierd that a chain of bars would ban team colors during such a time. Especially on "behalf" of a religion whose saner leaders have said they aren't offended and who don't even drink.

can see "not" going out of your way to offend Muslims

The opposite is the case here. The muslims are going out of their way to be offended. At what point do you say "You are not the only people in this country. You can't always get your way"?

It would be great to see the tables turned here, like having Brits say Muslim attire, mosques, symbols, etc, offend THEM, therefore they should not be displayed.

Now some high schools have been warning students that displaying the US flag is "provacative".

It certainly isn't in Florida, where it is state law (Carey Baker Freedom Flag Act of 2004) that a U.S. flag must be displayed in every classroom:

Bank of America makes donation to USF for flags in classrooms

Michelle Carlyon, (813) 974-9082

TAMPA, Fla. (Oct. 6, 2004) - Bank of America has agreed to generously donate funds to the University of South Florida Foundation in order to comply with a state law requiring American flags to be on display in every classroom.

Bank of America recently partnered with USF to provide a total of $33 million in tax-exempt bond financing. This financing allowed for the construction of two new research buildings in the university's Fowler Avenue Research Park. In recognition of this partnership, Bank of America will be providing a contribution to the USF Foundation, which will go toward the purchase of flags for USF's 310 classrooms and on university grounds across all four of USF's campuses.

Bank of America bucked the age-old banking industry tradition of hosting a post bond closing dinner, which would typically only include key participants of the transaction. This innovative celebration of the bank's partnership with a client is representative of its commitment to help the communities in which it does business as well as leaving a lasting legacy on all the university's campuses.

"We have had the opportunity to enjoy a long relationship with USF," said Steve Raney, Central Florida Middle Market Banking Executive for Bank of America. "We see the donation of these flags as both a needed item as well as a legacy of our relationship."

"Over the years, the Bank of America has donated significant scholarships and endowed professorships to USF," said USF Foundation President Michael Rierson. "But this patriotic gesture is a proactive statement by them that's even more grand than the size of the gift."

The Carey Baker Freedom Flag Act, passed by the Florida Legislature in 2004, requires a 2' x 3' U.S. flag to be displayed in every public school classroom in the state, including state university classrooms. The legislation also requires a U.S. flag, and the official flag of Florida, be displayed on all school grounds. Further, the law stipulates each educational institution pay for the flags through private fund raising and donation drives.

Just another way of looking at what I said in total. But yes.

It is one thing to fly on flag poles images depicting scenes from the Koran that have Mohammed in inexcusable, compromising positions. While accurate, this would represent a case of going out of your way to offend Muslims.

If Muslims are so easily offended by the sight of a British flag while they're in Britain, they should leave. Just as anybody who is offended at the sight of a U.S. flag on a t-shirt in a public school should either keep their opinions to the contrary to themselves or leave the country for someplace where the national flag doesn't evoke a sense of outrage.

Which only goes onto confirm your statement that some people are intent on being offended regardless of the lack of actual provocation.

Maybe we really do need a "new" crusade. Obviously, they already believe one has started.

Yes, it will be here soon. Local governments will require the Mexican flag to be flown alongside (or perhaps, one rung lower) with/to the American flag.

Get used to it: this is the new "diversity".

Muslims have declared the mathematics of Addition a heresy.

The plus sign is clearly a Crusader symbol, the use of which is now punishable by death.

However, Muslim extremists are still killing each other over the multiplication sign.

That is surprising! I thought that some other European country, like Holland, would be the first to fall to the Islamic Facists! Do the muslims not know that the Crusades were to TAKE back the land taken and occupied by them? Some former Christian countries are Islamic even after the Crusades. What are they teaching in our schools!??
